Fritz Barzilauskas
Francis Daniel Barzilauskas (June 13, 1920 – November 30, 1990) was an American professional football guard who played four seasons in the National Football League (NFL) with the Boston Yanks/New York Bulldogs and New York Giants. He was selected by the Yanks with the third overall pick in the 1947 NFL draft. He played college football at the College of the Holy Cross and Yale University. Early life and college Francis Daniel Barzilauskas was born on June 13, 1920, in Waterbury, Connecticut. He first attended Crosby High School in Waterbury, Connecticut before transferring to Cheshire Academy in Cheshire, Connecticut. Barzilauskas attended the College of the Holy Cross from 1937 to 1939. Guard (gridiron Football)
In American football, a guard (G), otherwise known as an offensive guard (OG), is an Lineman (gridiron football), offensive line player who lines up between the center (American football), center and the offensive tackle, tackles. Like other offensive line positions, guards are used primarily for Blocking (American football), blocking. Right guards (RG) is the term for the guards on the right of the offensive line, while left guards (LG) are on the left side. Notable guards in the National Football League include Chris Lindstrom (Atlanta Falcons), Quentin Nelson (Indianapolis Colts), and Joe Thuney (Chicago Bears). The guard's job is to protect the quarterback from the incoming defensive line, linemen during pass plays, as well as creating openings (holes) for the running backs to head through. 1947 AAFC Draft
The 1947 AAFC draft was the first collegiate draft of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC). It used an inverse order to the teams' final standings in the 1946 season. The Buffalo Bills, which had finished with the same record as the Brooklyn Dodgers, drafted second in each round, with Brooklyn drafting third. Beginning in round 16, a type of supplemental draft was held. From rounds 16 through 25, the Cleveland Browns and New York Yankees which were the league's top two teams, did not make any selections. From rounds 21 to 25, the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Dons did not receive any selections. Although the Miami Seahawks played in the league's inaugural season, the franchise was confiscated by the AAFC prior to the draft for failure to fulfill contractual obligations. The Brooklyn Dodgers were an American football team that played in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) from 1946 Brooklyn Dodgers (AAFC) season, 1946 to 1948 Brooklyn Dodgers (AAFC) season, 1948. Chicago Charities College All-Star Game
The Chicago Charities College All-Star Game was a preseason American football game played from 1934 to 1976 between the National Football League (NFL) champions and a team of star college seniors from the previous year. It was also known as the College All-Star Football Classic. The game was contested annually—except for 1974, due to that year's NFL strike—and was played in July, August, or September. In the 42 College All-Star Games, the defending pro champions won 31, the All-Stars won nine, and two were ties, giving the collegians a .238 winning percentage. The second game, played in 1935, involved the hometown Chicago Bears, runner-up of the 1934 season, instead of the defending champion New York Giants.
