French Brig Créole (1809)
''Créole'' was a three-masted schooner sloop-of-war of the French Navy. On 26 April 1809, she left île de France under Captain Bouvet, part of Hamelin's squadron. She sailed to Manilla, where she captured a British and a Portuguese prize. She took part in the re-captured of Foulpointe settlement. In October 1809, she seized and destroyed the British settlement of Tapanoolie, near Sumatra. She took part in the action of 18 November 1809, before returning to Île de France. A schooner ( ) is a type of sailing ship, sailing vessel defined by its Rig (sailing), rig: fore-and-aft rigged on all of two or more Mast (sailing), masts and, in the case of a two-masted schooner, the foremast generally being shorter than the mainmast. During the 18th and 19th centuries, a sloop-of-war was a warship of the Royal Navy with a single gun deck that carried up to 18 guns. Mahavelona (commonly called Foulpointe), is a town in the district of Toamasina II, in the region of Atsinanana, on the northern part of the east coast of Madagascar. Geography It is situated at the coast of the Indian Ocean south of the mouth of the Onibe River. The town is located at 60 km north of Toamasina on the RN 5 between Toamasina and Maroantsetra. Action Of 18 November 1809
The action of 18 November 1809 was the major engagement of a six-month cruise in the Indian Ocean by a French navy squadron during the Napoleonic Wars. Under Commodore Jacques Félix Emmanuel Hamelin, the squadron engaged in commerce raiding across the Bay of Bengal. Hamelin's squadron achieved local superiority, capturing several British merchant ships and destroying a factory of the East India Company (EIC). On 18 November 1809, two frigates and a brig of Hamelin's squadron encountered a convoy of three EIC East Indiamen bound for British India.
