''Hébé'' was a 38-gun warship of the French Navy, and lead ship of the . The British Royal Navy captured her in 1782 and took her into service as HMS ''Hebe'', before renaming her HMS ''Blonde'' in 1805. French Navy career Hébés first commander was Captain Joseph Pierre de Vigny, For her maiden voyage, ''Hébé'' was tasked to escort a convoy from Saint Malo to Brest and protect shipping from the depredations of the Royal Navy in the context of the Anglo-French War (1778–83), Anglo-French War. In the action of 4 September 1782, she was chased by the frigate HMS ''Rainbow'', whose 32-pounder carronade chase guns shot away her wheel and mortally wounded her second captain, Yves-Gabriel Calloët de Lanidy. Striking the colors—meaning lowering the flag (the " colors") that signifies a ship's or garrison's allegiance—is a universally recognized indication of surrender, particularly for ships at sea. Volant Vashon Ballard CB ( bapt. 4 January 1774 – 12 October 1832) was a Rear-Admiral of the Royal Navy. He served as a midshipman with George Vancouver on his voyage to the north-west coast of America. Early career Christened on 4 January 1774 at Ludlow, Shropshire, he was the second son of Humphrey Ballard and his wife Sarah (née Vashon). Ballard began his Royal Navy career as captain's servant to his uncle, Captain (later Admiral) James Vashon on in April 1786. The ''Expedition'' was the flagship of Commodore (later Rear-admiral) Alan Gardner. __NOTOC__ The Naval General Service Medal (NGSM) was a campaign medal approved in 1847, and issued to officers and men of the Royal Navy in 1849. The final date for submitting claims was 1 May 1851. Admiral Thomas Bladen Capel was one of the members of the board that authorised the medal. The NGSM was awarded retrospectively for various naval actions during the period 1793–1840, a period that included the French Revolutionary Wars, the Napoleonic Wars and the Anglo-American War of 1812. Each battle or campaign covered by the medal was represented by a clasp on the ribbon. The medal was never issued without a clasp, 231 of which were sanctioned. The clasps covered a variety of actions, from boat service, ship to ship skirmishes, to major fleet actions such as the Battle of Trafalgar. The term can refer to the rig (sail plan) of a sailing vessel (but with regional differences in definition), to a governmental enforcement agency vessel (such as a coast guard or border force cutter), to a type of ship's boat which can be used under sail or oars, or, historically, to a type of fast-sailing vessel introduced in the 18th century, some of which were used as small warships. Bréhat (, ; ) is an island and ''commune'' located near Paimpol, a mile off the northern coast of Brittany. Administratively, it is a commune in the Côtes-d'Armor department in northwestern France. ''Lively'' was launched at Saint-Malo in 1765 as ''Duchesse d'Aiguillon''. She spent her first years cod-fishing at Newfoundland. She was renamed ''Abeille'' after the French Revolution and became a transport in the service of the government. HMS ''Hebe'' captured her in 1795. A. Dixon purchased her, and Daniel Bennett purchased her from Dixon in 1798. He then employed her as whaler on some six complete voyages. She was lost c.1808 on her seventh voyage.
