''Fidèle'' was a 32-gun of the French Navy. Service history In 1791, ''Fidèle'' took part in Girardin's Expedition to Martinique, under Captain François Étienne de Rosily-Mesros. In November, she served as a troopship and in Brest harbour. ''Fidèle'' took part in the Croisière du Grand Hiver and in the Battle of Groix The Battle of Groix (, ) took place on 23 June 1795 off the island of Groix in the Bay of Biscay during the War of the First Coalition. It was fought between elements of the British Channel Fleet and the French Ponant Fleet, Atlantic Fleet, whi ..., under Lieutenant Bernard. François Étienne De Rosily-Mesros
Vice-Admiral François Étienne de Rosily-Mesros (13 January 1748 – 12 November 1832) was a French Navy officer who served in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. He was chosen by Napoleon to succeed Pierre-Charles Villeneuve as commander of the combined Franco-Spanish fleet at Cádiz, arriving to take up his appointment just after its defeat at the Battle of Trafalgar. His name is inscribed on the east side of the Arc de Triomphe. Life Early service His father the comte de Rosily was a chef d'escadre and was commanding the Brest fleet in 1762 when he admitted François as a garde de marine. From 1762 to 1769 François completed his apprenticeship at sea in several varied campaigns, visiting Rio de Janeiro, Newfoundland, Hispaniola and the Antilles. He became an enseigne de vaisseau in 1770, on a ship commanded by Kerguelen. The Battle of Groix (, ) took place on 23 June 1795 off the island of Groix in the Bay of Biscay during the War of the First Coalition. It was fought between elements of the British Channel Fleet and the French Ponant Fleet, Atlantic Fleet, which were cruising in the region on separate missions. The British fleet, commanded by Admiral Alexander Hood, 1st Viscount Bridport, Lord Bridport, was covering an Invasion of France (1795), invasion convoy carrying a Armée des Émigrés, French Royalist army tasked with invading Quiberon, while the French fleet under Vice-admiral Villaret de Joyeuse had sailed a week earlier to rescue a convoy from being attacked by a British squadron. Brest (; ) is a port city in the Finistère department, Brittany. Located in a sheltered bay not far from the western tip of a peninsula and the western extremity of metropolitan France, Brest is an important harbour and the second largest French military port after Toulon.
