Freddy Rodríguez (artist)
Freddy Rodríguez (1945 – October 10, 2022) was an American artist born in the Dominican Republic, who lived and worked in New York since 1963. Much of his work takes the form of large hard-edge geometric abstractions. His paintings have been widely exhibited and are held in several important collections. Early life Freddy Rodríguez was born in Santiago de los Caballeros in the Dominican Republic in 1945. He comes from a family of Dominican artists including Yoryi Morel. In 1963, Rodríguez immigrated to the United States for political reasons, during the period after the Rafael Trujillo assassination in 1961. In New York, he often visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where he was particularly inspired by the work of El Greco, Rembrandt, Goya, and Van Gogh. Whitfield Lovell (born October 2, 1959) is a contemporary African-American artist who is known primarily for his drawings of African-American individuals from the first half of the 20th century. Lovell creates these drawings in pencil, oil stick, or charcoal on paper, wood, or directly on walls. In his most recent work, these drawings are paired with found objects that Lovell collects at flea markets and antique shops. Philemona Williamson
Philemona Williamson (born 1951) is an artist from New York City. Biography Williamson was born in NYC in 1951. Her African-American parents were employed by a wealthy Greek family, and she grew up in their Manhattan home. She recalls a diversity of cultures but no racism when growing up. Her father was the chauffeur and her mother the housekeeper. She said of the environment in the home on Sutton Place that she and her parents maintained "a kind of quiet gentility" while their employers were involved in an endless "Greek passion play." She attended Bennington College, earning a bachelor's degree in 1973, and went on to NYU where she obtained a master's degree in 1979. Donald Cuthbert Locke (17 September 1930 – 6 December 2010) was a Guyana, Guyanese artist who created drawings, paintings and sculptures in a variety of media. He studied in the United Kingdom, and worked in Guyana and the United Kingdom before moving to the United States in 1979. Tito Enrique Canepa Jiménez (21 September 1916 – 11 February 2014) was a leading Dominican painter of the generation that came of age in the 1930s and 1940s. Canepa's artistic identity was shaped in New York City, where he lived from the age of 21, never returning to stay in his native country.
