Franț Țandără
Franț Țandără (22 February 1930, Izbiceni, Olt County – 2 May 2004, Giurgiu) was a Romanian communist and self-described torturer. Țandără was born into a poor and dysfunctional family. Abandoned by both parents, he became an army ward at age 11. After the end of World War II he led a vagrant life, before becoming in 1946 a sympathizer of the Romanian Communist Party in Giurgiu. According to his account from an interview, he curried favor with Pavel Ștefan, a local communist boss, who found work for him at Căile Ferate Române. After a dispute with his father, though, Țandără killed his father with an axe; he was apprehended and sentenced to 12 years hard labor. Țandără spent several years doing forced labor at the Danube–Black Sea Canal, and served as an informant to the communist authorities in the re-education camps there. Izbiceni
Izbiceni is a commune in Olt County, Oltenia, Romania. It is composed of a single village, Izbiceni. The commune is situated at the southern edge of the Wallachian Plain, on the right bank of the Olt River, close to where the river flows into the Danube. Izbiceni is located in the southeastern extremity of Olt County, south of the county seat, Slatina. The nearest town is Corabia, a port on the Danube, to the west. Teleorman County is on the left side of the Olt, with the port city of Turnu Măgurele to the southeast. Ovidiu
Ovidiu (, historical name: ''Canara'', ) is a town situated a few kilometres north of Constanța in Constanța County, Northern Dobruja, Romania. Ovidiu is quite small, with a population of 13,968 as of 2021, and many wealthy inhabitants of Constanța retire there. It officially became a town in 1989, as a result of the Romanian rural systematization program. In 1930, the town was renamed ''Ovidiu'' after the Roman poet Ovid (). He was supposedly buried on a nearby small island (also called ''Ovidiu'') in the Siutghiol Lake. ''Variety'' is an American trade magazine owned by Penske Media Corporation. It was founded by Sime Silverman in New York City in 1905 as a weekly newspaper reporting on theater and vaudeville. In 1933, ''Daily Variety'' was launched, based in Los Angeles, to cover the film industry, motion-picture industry. ''Variety'' website features entertainment news, reviews, box office results, plus a credits database, production charts and film calendar. Virgil Ierunca
Virgil Ierunca (; born Virgil Untaru ; August 16, 1920, Lădești, Vâlcea County – September 28, 2006, Paris) was a Romanian literary critic, journalist, and poet. He was married to Monica Lovinescu. Both Ierunca and Lovinescu worked for several decades for Radio Free Europe. In 2006 both were members of the Romanian Presidential Commission for the Study of the Communist Dictatorship in Romania; the Commission's chairman, Vladimir Tismăneanu, called them "the most honest and dignified couple in the history of Romanian culture". Humanitas () is an independent Romanian publishing house, located at Piața Presei Libere 1 (House of the Free Press), Bucharest. It was founded on February 1, 1990 (after the Romanian Revolution of 1989, Romanian Revolution) by the philosopher Gabriel Liiceanu, based on a state-owned publishing house, Editura Politică.
