Joseph François Français was a French mathematician. François Français worked extensively on differential calculus. He developed on the previous work of Jean-Robert Argand on complex numbers. Biography François Français was a student in a seminary and afterwards he became a teacher at Colmar College in 1791 for one year and then moved to Strasbourg College in 1792. The aftermath of the French Revolution of 1789 interrupted his career. Not everyone supported the government that formed after the revolution. The revolution overthrew the monarchy of King Louis XVI to establish a republic but brought in years of turmoil that finally led to the rise of Napoleon. France faced both internal and external wars. Pierre-Simon, Marquis de Laplace (; ; 23 March 1749 – 5 March 1827) was a French polymath, a scholar whose work has been instrumental in the fields of physics, astronomy, mathematics, engineering, statistics, and philosophy. He summarized and extended the work of his predecessors in his five-volume ''Mécanique céleste'' (''Celestial Mechanics'') (1799–1825). This work translated the geometric study of classical mechanics to one based on calculus, opening up a broader range of problems. René Taton
René Taton (4 April 1915 – 9 August 2004) was a French mathematician, historian of science, and long co-chief-editor of the ''Revue d'histoire des sciences''. He was awarded both the highest lifetime achievement awards in the field of history of science: the George Sarton Medal, in 1975, and the Alexandre Koyré Medal, in 1997. Life Taton was born on 4 April 1915 in L'Échelle, France. In 1935, he became a student of École normale supérieure de Saint-Cloud. He was a mathematician before moving to the history of science, and in 1951 cemented the move by earning a ''doctorat d'état ès lettres'' with philosopher Gaston Bachelard as his advisor, focusing on the history of projective geometry; his primary thesis concerned the work of Gaspard Monge and his accessory thesis concerned Girard Desargues. Jacques Frédéric Français (20 June 1775 – 9 March 1833) was a French engineer and mathematician. Biography Born on 20 June 1775, Jacques Frédéric Français was the son of a grocer of Saverne. He attended the Royal College of Strasbourg and enrolled voluntarily in the Army of the Rhine in 1793. In September 1794 he was transferred to the military engineering corps. Admitted to the École Polytechnique in the autumn of 1797, he moved in the spring of 1798 to the École du Génie de Metz and graduated with the brevet of first lieutenant. It was at this time that he wrote about the integration of differential equations. In January 1801 he took part in the Egyptian Campaign of the French Army.
