František Klapálek
František Klapálek (30 or 31 August 1863 – 3 February 1919) was a Czech entomologist. He was particularly interested in the mayflies and other freshwater insect fauna. He was also the first to translate the works of Charles Darwin and Jean-Henri Fabre into Czech. He also published a two-volume "Atlas of Central European Beetles". Biography Klapálek was born in the village of Luže and was educated at the Litomyšl gymnasium after which he studied at the Czech Charles University of Prague. Here he studied under Antonín Frič and became a zoological assistant at the Royal Czech Museum in Prague. He then taught at secondary schools in Litomyšl, and later at Prague in Žitná and Spálená Street. Still later he move to a school in Karlín where he was able to spend more time on entomological pursuits. He made trips to Austria, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, making collections of insects. Jean-Henri Fabre
Jean-Henri Casimir Fabre (21 December 1823 – 11 October 1915) was a French naturalist, entomologist, and author known for the lively style of his popular books on the lives of insects. Biography Fabre was born on 21 December 1823 in Saint-Léons in Aveyron, France. Fabre was largely an autodidact, owing to the poverty of his family. Nevertheless, he acquired a primary teaching certificate at the young age of 19 and began teaching in Carpentras whilst pursuing further studies. In 1849, he was appointed to a teaching post in Ajaccio (Corsica), then in 1853 moved on to the lycée in Avignon. Fabre was a popular teacher, physicist, chemist and botanist. Luže (Chrudim District)
Luže is a town in Chrudim District in the Pardubice Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 2,600 inhabitants. The historic town centre is well preserved and is protected by law as an urban monument zone. Litomyšl
Litomyšl (; german: Leitomischl) is a town in Svitavy District in the Pardubice Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 9,900 inhabitants. It is former bishopric and Latin Catholic titular see. Litomyšl is known for the château-type castle complex of the Litomyšl Castle, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Antonín Frič
Antonín Jan Frič (in German: Anton Johann Fritsch, 30 June 1832 – 15 November 1913) was a Czech paleontologist, biologist and geologist, living during the Austria-Hungary era. Professor at the Charles University and later became director of the National Museum in Prague. He became famous for his contributions on the field of Permo - Carboniferous ecosystems. He also became known for finding fossils once attributed to dinosaurs - '' Albisaurus albinus'' and '' Ponerosteus exogyrarum'' and so far the only pterosaur known from the Czech Republic, ''Cretornis hlavaci''. The pterosaur was small with a wingspan of about 1.5 m and lived in the Turonian. The first true dinosaur known from the Czech Republic was discovered 90 years after Frič's death (in 2003). Karlín
Karlín (german: Karolinenthal) is a cadastral area of Prague, part of Prague 8 municipal district, formerly an independent town (which became part of Prague in 1922). It is bordered by the river Vltava and Holešovice to the north, Vítkov hill and Žižkov to the south, New Town to the west and Libeň to the east. History The building of the Karlín district began in 1817, surrounding the Rosarium of the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star. The new settlement was named after the fourth wife of Emperor Francis I of Austria, Caroline Augusta of Bavaria.
