Franklin Township is a township in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,380 at the 2020 census, a decline from the figure of 2,528 tabulated in 2010. The township is served by the Uniontown Area School District. Unincorporated communities within the township include Smock, Bitner, Buena Vista, Flatwoods, and Laurel Hill. History The Smock Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. Geography Franklin Township is in northwestern Fayette County. It is bordered to the southwest by Redstone Creek, a tributary of the Monongahela River. The township extends northeast to the Youghiogheny River, another tributary of the Monongahela. Smock, the most populous settlement, is in the western part of the township along Redstone Creek. Uniontown is the largest city in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, United States, and its county seat. The population was 9,984 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, southeast of Pittsburgh. Perryopolis, Pennsylvania
Perryopolis is a borough in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, United States. The borough is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The population was 1,705 at the 2020 census. History George Washington purchased here when land first became available. He visited in 1770 and said, "as fine a land as I have ever seen, a great deal of rich meadow; it is well watered and has a valuable mill seat." The mill would eventually be completed in 1776. Once the mill was finished, it encouraged other business to come to the area to support and augment the business of the mill. Washington hoped to develop the remainder of Perryopolis, drawing up plans for the streets to be laid out in the shape of a wagon-wheel.
