Frank Hayes (musician)
Frank Hayes is an American musician prominent within the Science fiction fandom, science fiction/fantasy genre and culture known as filk. He is also an authority on information technology and, as senior news columnist for ''Computerworld'' magazine, has contributed numerous writings on the subject for more than two decades. Frank Hayes began recording and performing in the early 1980s and is best known for his humorous songs. "Never Set the Cat on Fire", "Little Fuzzy Animals", "S-100", "Cosmos" (which was played for the astronauts during a shuttle mission) and "The Grandfather Clock" have become standards of the genre. His most prominent studio album ''Don't Ask (filk album), Don't Ask'' included these tracks—other tracks on that album had to be withdrawn due to licensing issues, resulting in the release of another album, ''Never Set the Cat on Fire (filk album), Never Set the Cat on Fire''. Penguicon
Penguicon is a convention in southeastern Michigan designed originally to mix the communities of the science fiction fandom and Linux user groups. In addition to educational panels on science fiction in the media, attendees participate in professional and beginner-level panels on Linux and open-source software. Penguicon takes its name both from a Monty Python sketch and from Tux, the penguin mascot of Linux. Penguicon is held in the spring in the Detroit, Michigan metropolitan area. The venue, a hotel, has changed from year to year, but since 2014 the event has been held at the Westin Southfield Hotel in Southfield, Michigan. Since its founding, Penguicon has expanded its focus to include panels and events for foodies, cosplay, filk music (the folk music of science fiction fandom), gaming, and makerspaces. Pegasus Award
The Pegasus Award is the premier award for filk music and is annually hosted at the Ohio Valley Filk Fest (OVFF). Awards The Pegasus Awards were founded to recognize and honor excellence in filking. As science fiction (sci-fi) became better known and widespread within society in the 20th century as a distinct literary genre, many fans expressed themselves through works of music and art, including filking. The Pegasus Awards formally recognise filking or fan music as a fine lens that the sci-fi community shares with particular fiction-based cultural ideas. Anyone with an interest in filk can nominate songs or individuals for the awards, and anyone can vote. It is not necessary to be a member of the convention to be involved in the nomination and voting process.
