Francisco Hernández Ortiz-Pizarro (1555–1613) was the founder of Fort Calbuco. He was born in Villacastín, Spain. Calbuco
Calbuco is a city and commune in southern Chile administered by the Municipality of Calbuco. Administratively Calbuco belongs to the Llanquihue Province of Los Lagos Region. The origin of the city was the Spanish Fort Calbuco founded in 1603, and became later an important fish market. The archaeological site of Monte Verde lies within the commune. Calbuco Island is part of the commune and contains the city of Calbuco. There are thirteen other islands in the commune: Huar, Puluqui, Chidhuapi, Tabón, Mayelhue, Lín, Quenu, Quihua, Huapi Abtao, Chaullín, Caicué o lagartija, Tautil and Queullín. Destruction Of The Seven Cities
The Destruction of the Seven Cities () is a term used in Chilean historiography to refer to the destruction or abandonment of seven major Spanish outposts in zona Sur, southern Chile around 1600, caused by the Mapuche and Huilliche people, Huilliche uprising of 1598. The Destruction of the Seven Cities, in traditional historiography, marks the end of the Conquest of Chile, Conquest period and the beginning of the proper Colonial Chile, colonial period. Indios Reyunos
During colonial times indios reyunos was a term to designate a group of huilliche ''yanakuna'' that settled in the area of Calbuco and Abtao, Southern Chile. This group originated from the indigenous peoples that stayed loyal to the Spanish after the Destruction of the Seven Cities (1599–1604) and followed them from Valdivia and Osorno to the new settlements near Chiloé Archipelago. It is reported that they were initially 600 of which 300 settled in Calbuco. Because of their loyalty they were rewarded with an exemption from tributes and the encomienda and obtained salary from the Real Situado. Indios reyunos played an important role in the 1712 conflict between Alejandro Garzón and José Marín de Velasco and the subsequent Huilliche rebellion in Chiloé. In this last rebellion the indios reyunos of Calbuco stayed loyal to the Spaniards imprisoning a messenger from Chiloé that invited them to join the rebellion. Chacao Channel
The Chacao Channel () is located in Los Lagos Region, Chile and separates Chiloé Island from mainland Chile. The channel is about 40 km long and 4 km wide and connects the Pacific Ocean and Gulf of Ancud. The channel was created during the Quaternary glaciations by successive glaciers that flowed down from the Andes to the coast. The construction of a Chacao Channel bridge, bridge connecting the island with the continent was discussed at government level for some time, but during the first government of Michelle Bachelet (2006–2010) it was turned down due to its high cost in comparison with other proposals that could be done to benefit islanders. Later, it was reactivated during Sebastián Piñera government, and finally auctioned. Construction started in 2017 and expected to be completed in 2028.
