Franche-Comté Saltwater Basin
The Franche-Comté salt basin is a geological formation that developed during the Late Triassic on the northwestern flank of the Jura Mountains. It stretches diagonally across the Franche-Comté region, from southeastern Haute-Saône to the central Jura (department), Jura department. The salt deposits are primarily located in the Jura and Doubs departments, with exploitation dating from Ancient history, Antiquity to the 21st century. In Haute-Saône, extraction occurred from the 12th to the 20th centuries, where the salt basin coexists with the Keuper coal basin of Haute-Saône, which provided coal for evaporating brine, reducing production costs for mining companies. Since the 19th century, this activity has been linked to the chemical industry. Salins-les-Bains (), commonly referred to simply as Salins, is a commune in the Jura department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region in Eastern France. It is located on the departmental border with Doubs, 34.8 km (21.6 mi) to the south-southwest of Besançon. In 2018, Salins-les-Bains had a population of 2,567. The town owes its name to its saline waters which shaped its history for centuries; they continue to attract visitors today, for the town's bedrock contains salt and gypsum deposits. In 2009 the historic saltworks were added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites as an addition to the Royal Saltworks at Arc-et-Senans site, which was inscribed in 1982. Lons-le-Saunier () is a commune and capital of the Jura Department, eastern France. Geography The town is in the heart of the Revermont region, at the foot of the first plateau of the Jura massif. The Jura escarpment extends to the east and south, while to the west lies the plain of Bresse and to the north extensive vineyards. The river Vallière runs through the town, rising in a typical Jura blind valley not far away, at Revigny. It has been conduited since the 1960s on grounds of hygiene, since sewage outlets run into it.
