Fort Benton, Montana
Fort Benton is a city in and the county seat of Chouteau County, Montana, United States. Established in 1846, Fort Benton is the oldest continuously occupied settlement in Montana. Fort Benton was the most upstream navigable port on the Mississippi River System, and is considered "the world’s innermost port". The city's waterfront area, the most important aspect of its 19th century growth, was designated the Fort Benton Historic District, a National Historic Landmark, in 1961. The population was 1,449 at the 2020 census. Alexander Culbertson
Alexander Culbertson (1809–1879), was an American fur trader who founded Fort Benton, Montana, and was a special government agent who played an important role in the negotiations leading to the 1851 treaty of Fort Laramie. Later, Culbertson and his wife Natawista Iksina negotiated with the Blackfoot Confederacy to let the northern Pacific railroad survey of 1853 continue unharmed. Early life Culbertson was born in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania in 1809. His family was of Scots-Irish ancestry, and he was named for his great-grandfather. He left the family home in 1826, when he followed his uncle, John Craighead Culbertson, a sutler with the army, to Florida. There, under his uncle's tutelage, he traveled throughout the south and learned the rudiments of trade. The head of navigation is the farthest point above the mouth of a river that can be navigated by ships. Mullan Road
Mullan Road was the first covered wagon, wagon road to cross the Rocky Mountains to the Inland Empire (Pacific Northwest), Inland of the Pacific Northwest.
