Forever Enthralled
''Forever Enthralled'' () is a Chinese biographical film directed by Chen Kaige; the film marks Chen's eleventh feature film as a director. ''Forever Enthralled'' follows the life of Mei Lanfang, one of China's premiere Chinese Opera, opera performers. It stars Leon Lai as Mei, Zhang Ziyi, Sun Honglei and Masanobu Andō. Known during production as ''Mei Lanfang'', the film's English title was changed in November 2008, shortly before its release, to ''Forever Enthralled''. The film was shown in competition at the 2009 Berlin International Film Festival for the Berlin International Film Festival#Golden Bear winners, Golden Bear award. Mei Lanfang
Mei Lan (22 October 1894 – 8 August 1961), better known by his stage name Mei Lanfang, was a notable Chinese Peking opera artist in Chinese theater, modern Chinese theater. Mei was known as the "Queen of Peking Opera". Mei was exclusively known for his dan (Chinese opera), female lead roles (''dan'') and particularly his "qingyi (Chinese opera), verdant-robed girls" (''qingyi''), young or middle-aged women of grace and refinement. ''The Promise'' is a 2005 Chinese epic fantasy film directed by Chen Kaige, starring Jang Dong-gun, Hiroyuki Sanada, Cecilia Cheung, and Nicholas Tse. It is loosely adapted from '' The Kunlun Slave'', a ''wuxia'' romance story written by Pei Xing in the ninth century during the Tang dynasty. Responses to the film were mainly mixed to negative. Wang Xueqi
Wang Xueqi (; born 19 March 1946) is a Chinese film actor whose career has spanned over 25 years. He was often cast in early Fifth Generation films, such as Chen Kaige's ''Yellow Earth'' (1984) and '' The Big Parade'' (1986), Huang Jianxin's ''Samsara'', and Zhang Yimou's '' Codename Cougar'' (1989). Meng Xiaodong () (December 9, 1908 – May 26, 1977) was a Chinese actress of Peking opera who specialized in old '' sheng'' (male) roles. Life In August 1925, Meng met Mei Lanfang and they co-starred in the film ''Yóu lóng xī fèng'' (游龙戏凤). In 1927 Meng married Mei Lanfang as his concubine. At that time, Mei Lanfang already had two wives, official wife Wang Minghua and concubine Fu Zhifang. In August 1930, Mei's aunt died. The Mei family did not recognize the marriage between Meng and Mei and refused to allow Meng to wear mourning clothes as their daughter-in-law. The two then broke up but reunited soon after.
