Forbes, Missouri
Forbes is an unincorporated community in southeastern Holt County, Missouri, United States. History Forbes was laid out on April 3rd, 1869 and was established along the Kansas City, St. Joseph and Council Bluffs Railway. The community was named for railroad magnate John Murray Forbes. At that time there were only 40 families in the vicinity and no village established yet. The first post office called Elm Grove was operated by the founder of the town Levi Devorss from 1868 to 1895. The railroad station at that time was named Tarkio. During the 1880 census, the communtiy of Forbes boasted a populated of 159 and was considered a village. A post office called Forbes was established in 1903, and remained in operation until 1975. The BNSF railway alongside Forbes continues to operate freight trains carrying coal for the Iatan power plant near Kansas City. Iatan, Missouri
Iatan is a village in Platte County, Missouri within the United States. The population was 69 at the 2010 census. It is within the Kansas City metropolitan area. History The community is said to derive its name from Iatan, a chief of the Otoe tribe who supposedly derived his name from battles with the Comanche who were sometimes also referred to as Iatan. The town site was platted in 1842. A post office called Iatan was established in 1855, and remained in operation until 1964. Iatan, first settled by John Dougherty in 1837, was one of the first communities to be established after the Platte Purchase allowed white settlement on former Native American land (which was proclaimed in February 1837). It was initially an important trading port on the Missouri River but was soon overtaken by Weston, Missouri five miles (8 km) to the south and St. Joseph, Missouri to the north. Forest City, Missouri
Forest City is a city in Holt County, Missouri, United States. The population was 243 at the 2020 census. History Forest City was platted on May 16, 1857, with later additions being filed in 1868. The city was named from the dense forest near the original the town site. A post office called Forest City has been in operation since 1857. The town was incorporated in 1861 and has also been spelled 'Forrest'.
