Fontenoy-le-Château
Fontenoy-le-Château () is a commune in the Vosges department in Grand Est in northeastern France. In January 2013 it merged with the former commune of Le Magny. Personalities The poet Nicolas Joseph Florent Gilbert was born on December 15, 1750, in Fontenoy-le-Château. Julie-Victoire Daubié (26 March 1824 in Bains-les-Bains – 26 August 1874 in Fontenoy-le-Château). She was the first woman to have graduated from a French university when she obtained a bachelor's degree in Lyon in 1861. Geography The Côney forms the commune's north-eastern border, flows south-westward through the middle of the commune, crosses the village, and forms part of the commune's south-western border. Château De Fontenoy-le-Château
The Château de Fontenoy-le-Château is a ruined castle located in the ''Communes of France, commune'' of Fontenoy-le-Château in the Vosges (department), Vosges ''Departments of France, département'' of north-eastern France. It held a defensive role from the beginning of the 10th century until its partial destruction in 1635, during the Thirty Years' War. History Creation In the late 10th century, around 980, the Bishops of Toul, who owned this allodial title, built a large square tower to protect their territory and to close the Valley of Côney River. It was one of the first fortresses in the south of the Vosges, along with Épinal and Remiremont. This square tower was a building of exceptional quality for this period, which was showing the power of its owners and was controlling the pathway between Burgundy (historical region), Burgundy and Lorraine (duchy), Lorraine. Julie-Victoire Daubié
Julie-Victoire Daubié (26 March 1824 – 26 August 1874) was a French journalist. She was the first woman to have graduated from a French university when she obtained a licentiate degree in Lyon in 1871. Josephine Butler translated a part of Julie-Victoire Daubié's books into English.''French morality, under the regulation system'', ed. Trübner, London, 1870. Early life Daubié was born on 26 March 1824 in Bains-les-Bains in the Vosges. Her father died when she was less than two years old, and she and her seven siblings moved with their mother to Fontenoy, staying with the family of their father. She studied Latin, Greek, German, history, and geography with help from her brother. In 1844, she received a teacher's certificate of ability and studied zoology at the Museum of Natural History in Paris. At the museum, she was taught by renowned specialist Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire. Nicolas-Joseph-Laurent Gilbert (December 15, 1750 – November 16, 1780) was a French poet born at Fontenoy-le-Château, Vosges, Lorraine. Having completed his education at the college of Dole, he devoted himself for a time to a half-scholastic, half-literary life at Nancy, but in 1774 he found his way to the capital. As an opponent of the Encyclopaedists and a panegyrist of Louis XV, he received considerable pensions. He died in Paris in 1780 from the results of a fall from his horse.
