Folkestone F.C.
Folkestone Football Club was the name of two English football clubs based in the town of Folkestone, Kent. It is unclear if the two clubs were connected, but neither has any formal connection to Folkestone Invicta, founded in 1936, which took over the Cheriton Road stadium after the demise of Folkestone F.C. in 1990. Folkestone Invicta F.C. has since become the spiritual successor of the club, inheriting its history and Folkestone F.C.'s previous honours. History The first Folkestone F.C. club was one of the founder members of the Kent League in 1894 but left that league in 1904. In 1923 the club resurfaced in the Southern League, where the team played until the Second World War. The second Folkestone F.C. began life as Folkestone Town F.C., and played in the Kent League from 1945 until the league folded in 1959, whereupon the club joined the Southern League. Jack Kirby (English Footballer)
John Kirby (30 September 1909 – 15 June 1960) was an English football goalkeeper who played for Derby County. Kirby is best remembered as the only Derby player touring Germany in 1934 who refused to stiff arm salute before each game. Derby County Kirby joined Derby County from Staffordshire based, Newhall United in April 1929. Kirby debuted for Derby during the 1929–30 season. In 1934 he was part of the Derby side that toured Germany. Kirby defied the German authorities by being the only member of the team to refuse to give the Nazi salute before each game. A photo of Kirby turning his body 90 degrees and being the only Derby player refusing to stiff arm salute, was auctioned for 550 pounds in 2012. Kirby's gesture preceded Stan Cullis being dropped when responding "Count me out", when directed pre-match to stiff arm salute when England played Germany in Berlin in 1938. Folkestone
Folkestone ( ) is a coastal town on the English Channel, in Kent, south-east England. The town lies on the southern edge of the North Downs at a valley between two cliffs. It was an important harbour, shipping port, and fashionable coastal resort for most of the 19th and mid-20th centuries. This location has had a settlement since the Mesolithic era. A nunnery was founded by Eanswith, granddaughter of Æthelberht of Kent in the 7th century, who is still commemorated as part of the town's culture. During the 13th century, it developed into a seaport, and the harbour developed during the early 19th century to defend against a French invasion. Folkestone expanded further west after the arrival of the railway in 1843 as an elegant coastal resort, thanks to the investment of the Earl of Radnor under the urban plan of Decimus Burton. The 1963–64 Southern Football League season was the 61st in the history of the league, an English football competition. Yeovil Town won the championship, whilst Cheltenham Town, Folkestone Town, King's Lynn, and Tonbridge were all promoted to the Premier Division.
