Darwin ( ; Larrakia: ) is the capital city of the Northern Territory, Australia. With an estimated population of 147,255 as of 2019, the city contains the majority of the residents of the sparsely populated Northern Territory. It is the smallest, wettest, and most northerly of the Australian capital cities and serves as the Top End's regional centre. Darwin's proximity to Southeast Asia makes the city's location a key link between Australia and countries such as Indonesia and East Timor. The Stuart Highway begins in Darwin, extends southerly across central Australia through Tennant Creek and Alice Springs, concluding in Port Augusta, South Australia. The city is built upon a low bluff overlooking Darwin Harbour. Darwin's suburbs begin at Lee Point in the north and stretch to Berrimah in the east. The Litchfield Council is a local government area of the Northern Territory of Australia on the eastern and southeastern outskirts of the Darwin- Palmerston urban area. The municipality covers an area of , and was created by the Northern Territory government on 6 September 1985. Geography The Litchfield Municipality is bounded by the Adelaide River to the east, Van Diemen Gulf and the Coomalie Shire in the south and the City of Darwin and City of Palmerston to the northwest. Acacia Hills, Northern Territory
Acacia Hills is an outer rural locality of Darwin. It is south of the Darwin CBD in Litchfield Municipality. Named for the acacia shrub that is endemic to the area, the suburb is largely rural land, just north of Manton Dam and west of the Adelaide River. Mango farming is an important local industry. Both the Stuart Highway and Adelaide–Darwin rail corridor pass through the area. The area is notable as the site of the 1999 Acacia Hills Shootout, where bushman Rodney Ansell ambushed several policemen at a roadblock. Ansell killed one policeman but was eventually shot himself in the gun battle that followed.
