Floridia (; scn, Ciuriḍḍia ; from Latin "day of Flora" or the adjective ''floridus'' "florid") is a town and ''comune'' in the Province of Syracuse, Sicily (Italy). Geography Floridia lies west of Syracuse. Its principal industries are agriculture, livestock, and manufacturing. Lucia Migliaccio, Duchessa di Floridia (19 July 1770, in Syracuse, Sicily – 26 April 1826, in Naples) was the second wife of Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies. Chiesa Del Carmine, Floridia
The Chiesa del Carmine is a Baroque-style church located on Via Vincenzo Bellini #57 in the town of Floridia, in the Province of Siracusa, region of Sicily, Italy. History and Description Also known as the Church of the ''Beata Vergine Maria di Monte Carmelo'' (Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel) or ''Madonna del Carmine'', this church was built in the 18th century at the site of a former chapel dedicated to the ''Anime del Purgatorio'' (Souls in Purgatory). The church has a large crypt with an ossuary that was used for burials in prior centuries. The tower-like facade has three orders and is surmounted by a bell-tower. The facade is preceded by a broad staircase. The central niche has a statue depicting the ''Madonna del Carmine'', while the four flanking niches depict the four evangelist. San Bartolomeo is a Baroque-style mother church, or chiesa madre, located on Via Francesco Crispi #1 in the town of Floridia, in the Province of Siracusa, region of Sicily, Italy. History and Description A prior mother church located in the prior old town and dedicated to the Madonna of the Providence, was razed by the 1693 Sicily earthquake. Flora (mythology)
Flora ( la, Flōra) is a Roman goddess of flowers and of the season of spring – a symbol for nature and flowers (especially the may-flower). While she was otherwise a relatively minor figure in Roman mythology, being one among several fertility goddesses, her association with the spring gave her particular importance at the coming of springtime, as did her role as goddess of youth. 1908 Messina Earthquake
The 1908 Messina earthquake (also known as the 1908 Messina and Reggio earthquake) occurred on 28 December in Sicily and Calabria, southern Italy with a moment magnitude of 7.1 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of XI (''Extreme''). The epicenter was in the Strait of Messina which separates Sicily from the Italian mainland. The cities of Messina and Reggio Calabria were almost completely destroyed and between 75,000 and 82,000 people died. It was the most destructive earthquake ever to strike Europe.
