Flesberg
Flesberg is a Municipalities of Norway, municipality in Buskerud Counties of Norway, county, Norway. It is part of the Districts of Norway, traditional region of Numedal. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Lampeland. The economy of Flesberg is dominated by forestry and agriculture, as well as the cluster of high-tech industries in neighbouring Kongsberg. General information Etymology The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old ''Flesberg'' farm (Old Norse: ''Flesberg''), since the first church was built here. The first element is ''fles'' which means "rock (geology), rock" and the last element is ''berg'' which means "mountain". Coat-of-arms The Coat of arms, coat-of-arms is from modern times. Flesberg Stave Church
Flesberg Stave Church () is a stave church located at Flesberg in Buskerud, Buskerud county, Norway. History Written sources mention the church the first time in 1359, but it was probably built in the latter half of the 1100s or the first half of the 1200s. The church was originally a single nave church (''type B'') with four free-standing internal posts bearing a raised central roof, surrounded by an ambulatory or aisles on all four sides. It had a narrower chancel, also with a raised central roof, and a semicircular apse. It was surrounded by a gallery loosely connected to the plank walls. In 1735, the chancel and apse, as well as the east wall of the nave, were removed. The nave was extended eastwards and two transepts were added, making a cruciform plan. The additions were built in horizontal log construction with notched corners. Portal planks are decorated with carved vines and animal ornamentation. Numedal
Numedal () is a valley and a traditional district in Eastern Norway located within the county of Buskerud. It traditionally includes the municipalities Flesberg, Nore og Uvdal and Rollag. Administratively, it now also includes Kongsberg. Geography Numedal is the southernmost valley of the major valleys in Eastern Norway. Numedal is largely a U-shaped valley. Most of the area is mountainous, especially west of the main valley, with steep valley sides. Running north–south, it extends between Flesberg in the south to Rødberg in the north, passing through the municipalities of Flesberg, Rollag and Nore og Uvdal. The Numedalslågen, the third-longest river in Norway, flows through the valley before discharging into Oslofjord at Larvik. Transportation National Road 40 runs from Larvik. Buskerud
Buskerud () is a Counties of Norway, county and a current electoral district in Norway, bordering Akershus, Oslo, Innlandet, Vestland, Telemark and Vestfold. The region extends from the Oslofjord and Drammensfjorden in the southeast to Hardangervidda mountain range in the northwest. The county administration was in modern times located in Drammen. Buskerud was merged with Akershus and Østfold into the newly created Viken (county), Viken County on 1 January 2020. Lampeland
Lampeland is a village located in Buskerud, Norway. It is the administrative centre of Flesberg municipality. The population of the village as of 2013 was 521 residents. Lampeland is situated in the traditional region of Numedal. It is located on the east side of the Numedalslågen River. It is about 22 km north of Kongsberg, 60 km from Drammen and 100 km from Oslo. Blefjell
Blefjell is a small mountain range located along the border between Buskerud and Telemark in Norway. It encompasses parts of the five municipalities of Rollag, Flesberg, Kongsberg, Notodden and Tinn. The highest point is Bletoppen at above sea level. The bedrock in Blefjell is hard quartzite. The mountain area falls off steeply to the west and more gently to the east. The area is thus most easily accessible from the east (Flesberg) and from the south (Bolkesjø). The area is a popular tourist destination, being approximately 1 hour drive from Kongsberg. There are a number of mountain lodges, hotels, and cabins. The area also has several ski resorts. Jul Låg
Jul Låg (13 November 1915 - 2 February 2000) was a Norwegian scientist and soil researcher. Biography He was born in Flesberg in Buskerud, Norway. He grew up on the farm in Flesberg. After elementary school he was a farm laborer for several years. He took the dr.agric. degree in 1949. He also studied geology at the University of Oslo (1942–43). He studied under graduate fellowships and scholarships from (1942–45). He examined and described the rare Norwegian soil types, including rendzina-like soil. Låg has examined the supply of plant nutrients in precipitation in Norway. He hired scientists in the field both at home and abroad, organized annual symposia where he gave several speeches, and he edited the books where the various contributions were published. An area of research, which he started just before he retired, was the impact of soil and rock properties on human and animal health. Finn Qvale
Finn Qvale (18 April 1873 – 20 January 1955) was a Norwegian military officer, cartographer, and sports official. He was born in Flesberg, finished his secondary education in 1891, and graduated as an officer in 1894. He attended the Norwegian Military College. He worked in the Norwegian Geographical Survey from 1897 to 1918, and issued several maps of different places in Eastern Norway. He led the Infantry Winter School from its establishment in 1923 to 1938, having reached the rank of major in 1918. Qvale chaired the Association for the Promotion of Skiing from 1924 to 1937. He was a board member in the Norwegian Trekking Association and the Norwegian Association of Hunters and Anglers. He was decorated as a Commander of the Order of St. Olav.
