Flann Óge Ó Domhnalláin
Flann Óge Ó Domhnalláin (died 1342) was Chief Poet of Connacht. Ó Domhnalláin was a member of an Irish family of Bards, originally located in Ballydonnellan, County Galway. A sept of the Uà Maine called Clann Breasail, they held the position of ''"Cathmhaol"'' or Battle Champion. His ancestry is given as ''"Domnallan mac Maelbrigdi mic Grenain mic Loingsich mic Domnallain mic Bresail mic Dluthaig mic Fithchellaig mic Dicholla mic Eogain Find"'', with Domnallan mac Maelbrigdi been the ancestor from whom the surname Ó Domhnalláin is derived. Ó Domhnalláin is recorded as ''"ollamh Connacht i n-dán"'', or chief poet of Connacht, in his obituary in the Annals of the Four Masters. This indicates that his work was considered to be the very highest standard among his generation of poets in the province, yet none of his work is known to have survived. Connacht
Connacht or Connaught ( ; or ), is the smallest of the four provinces of Ireland, situated in the west of Ireland. Until the ninth century it consisted of several independent major Gaelic kingdoms (Uà Fiachrach, Uà Briúin, Uà Maine, ConmhaÃcne, and Delbhna). The Ó Dálaigh () were a learned Irish Bardic poetry, bardic family who first came to prominence early in the 12th century, when Cú Connacht Ó Dálaigh was described as "The first ''Ollamh'' of poetry in all Ireland" (''ollamh'' is the title given to university professors in Modern Irish). The modern Irish surnames O'Daly, Daly, Daley, Dayley, Dalley, Daily, Dailey and Dawley are derived from Ó Dálaigh. Name derivation The name Ó Dálaigh means 'descendant of Dálach'. Amlaid Ua Domhnalláin (died 1177), Chief poet of Connacht. Amlaid Ua Domhnalláin was a member of a bardic family, Ó Domhnalláin of Clan Breasil, Máenmaige in Ui Maine (now Ballydonnellan, County Galway). Other such members of his family would include Flann Óc mac Séoan Ó Domhnalláin, Flann Óge Ó Domhnalláin, Mael Sechlainn Ó Domhnalláin, Pádhraic Ó Domhnalláin, Padraig Ó Domhnallain, Ainglioch Ó Dónalláin and Seosamh Ó Dónalláin. Mac Con Midhe
Mac Con Midhe was the name of a family of poets in Gaelic Ireland. The name is also now rendered as Mac Namee, McNamee, Conmee, and McConway. Overview There was a branch of this Ulster sept who were erenaghs of Comber, on the River Foyle in the deanery of Derry, and they are recorded as such as late as 1606 when Bishop Montgomery's survey of the diocese was made. Just about that time the Ulster Plantation records show the name Mac Con Midhe among the natives of County Tyrone and later in the century the name appeared in Charles O'Neill's regiment in James II's Irish army. Tyrone and Derry is where the name is mainly found today. That was not the case in the 17th century. Petty's "census" found them most numerous in County Leitrim and in the previous century the "Fiants" show that they were in Leitrim and other parts of Connacht bordering Ulster, as well as in Derry and Donegal.
