Fitzpatrick (surname)
Fitzpatrick () is an Irish surname that most commonly arose as an anglicised version of the Irish patronymic surname Mac Giolla Phádraig ()Kay Muhr, Liam Ó hAisibéil"Fitzpatrick"in ''The Oxford Dictionary of Family Names of Ireland'', Oxford University Press, 2021 ''"Son of the Devotee of (St.) Patrick"''. In some cases, it may also have independently arisen by a similar anglicization of a likely-distinct Irish patronymic, Ó Maol Phádraig, ''"Descendent of the Follower of (St.) Patrick"'', or in rare cases as a genuine Anglo-Irish patronymic incorporating the Norman French '' fitz'' ('son of') and the male name Patrick. His sons were subsequently styled '' Mac Giolla Phádraig'' (meaning, ''son of Giolla Phádraig''), and gave rise to a dynasty of Kings of Ossory that bore this patr ...

It was developed in 1975 by American dermatologist Thomas B. Fitzpatrick as a way to estimate the response of different types of skin to ultraviolet (UV) light.Fitzpatrick, T. B. (1975). "Soleil et peau" un and skin ''Journal de Médecine Esthétique'' (in French) (2): 33–34 It was initially developed on the basis of skin color to measure the correct dose of UVA for PUVA therapy, and when the initial testing based only on hair and eye color resulted in too high UVA doses for some, it was altered to be based on the patient's reports of how their skin responds to the sun; it was also extended to a wider range of skin types.Pathak, M. The Fitzpatrick Lecture is given annually at the Royal College of Physicians on a subject related to history of medicine. The lecturer, who must be a fellow of the college, is selected by the president and may be chosen to speak for two years successively. The lectures are supported by funds from the Fitzpatrick Trust which was established in 1901 by Agnes Letitia Fitzpatrick with a £2,000 donation in memory of her physician husband Thomas Fitzpatrick (London physician), Thomas Fitzpatrick. Agnes was influenced by her husband's close friend, Sir Norman Moore, 1st Baronet, Sir Norman Moore, who persuaded her to choose ''history of medicine'' as a subject. Subsequently, Moore was credited with its idea and implementation. The first two Fitzpatrick lectures were given by Joseph Frank Payne, whose request instigated history of medicine lectures at the Royal Society of Medicine and with whose support Sir William Osler established the History of Medicine Society, History of Medicine ...
