FitzRoy John Somerset, 5th Baron Raglan (8 November 1927 – 24 January 2010) was a British peer, the son of FitzRoy Richard Somerset, 4th Baron Raglan and the Hon. Julia Hamilton. He married Alice Baily, daughter of Peter Baily, in 1973. He and Alice were divorced in 1981. They had no children. Charity work Raglan was the president of the equality charity Parity. He was the Patron of the Bugatti Owners' Club, owners and operators of the renowned Prescott Speed Hill Climb, near Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Baron Raglan, of Raglan in the County of Monmouth, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 20 October 1852 for the military commander Lord FitzRoy Somerset, chiefly remembered as commander of the British troops during the Crimean War. History The title was created for Lord FitzRoy Somerset, the youngest son of Henry Somerset, 5th Duke of Beaufort (see Duke of Beaufort for earlier history of the family). His second but eldest surviving son, the second Baron, served as a Lord-in-waiting (government whip in the House of Lords) from 1866 to 1868 in the Conservative administrations of the Earl of Derby and Benjamin Disraeli. The House of Beaufort ( ) is an English noble family which originated in the fourteenth century as the legitimated issue of John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster, by Katherine Swynford. Parity is a United Kingdom-based men's rights organisation, which describes itself as campaigning to promote and protect the equality of men and women under the law. Its main focus has been the discrimination against men in the area of state pensions and associated benefits, and most of its notable successes have occurred in this field. Bugatti Owners' Club
Prescott Speed Hill Climb is a hillclimb in Gloucestershire, England. The course used for most events (the "Long Course") is in length, and the hill record is held by Matthew Ryder who took the outright hill record in a 4.0L Judd V8 powered Gould GR59 single seater with a time of 34.6 seconds on Sunday 18 August September 2024. The track was extended in 1960 to form the present Long Course. There is also a "Short Course" of , now used only by meetings organised by the Vintage Sports-Car Club. History Bugatti Owners' Club The track is owned by the Bugatti Owners' Club (BOC), founded in 1929, who were looking for a permanent home and bought the land in 1937. Geoffrey Somerset, 6th Baron Raglan (born 29 August 1932), is a British peer, businessman, and Conservative politician. Early life Raglan is the younger son of FitzRoy Somerset, 4th Baron Raglan, by his marriage to the Hon. Julia Hamilton, daughter of the 11th Lord Belhaven and Stenton. He was educated at the Dragon School, Oxford, Westminster School, and the Royal Agricultural College. Cefntilla Court
Cefntilla Court, (also Cefn Tilla), Llandenny, Monmouthshire, Wales, is a country house dating from the mid-19th century. Its origins date from 1616. During the English Civil War, the court was the headquarters of Thomas Fairfax during the siege of Raglan Castle and the terms of the castle's surrender were signed at the house in 1646. By the early 19th century, the court was derelict. In 1856 it was sold by Crawshay Bailey to the Memorial Committee established to commemorate the life of FitzRoy Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan, British commander during the Crimean War. The house was completely rebuilt by Thomas Henry Wyatt and donated to Lord Raglan's heir, Richard Somerset as a memorial to his father. The house is a Grade II* listed building.
