First Story
First Story is an English charity that encourages children and young people to write creatively, outside the curriculum, for self-expression and pleasure. Its aim is to empower children and young people from low-income communities to find and develop their voices and, in doing so, thrive in education and beyond. The charity works in state secondary schools serving low-income communities and its operating regions are Greater London, the East Midlands and the North of England. First Story's Young Writers Programme places professional authors into schools, where they work with a consistent cohort of children and young people, to develop confidence, creativity and writing ability. The programme ends with the publication of an anthology of students' writing, edited by their writer in residence. First Story produces over 60 new publications a year. Poverty In The United Kingdom
Poverty in the United Kingdom is the condition experienced by the portion of the population of the United Kingdom that lacks adequate financial resources for a certain standard of living, as defined under the various measures of poverty. Data based on incomes published in 2016 by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) show that, after housing costs have been taken into consideration, the number of people living in the UK in relative poverty to be 13.44m (21% of the population). The Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF), reported that in 2021, about 1 in 5 ( 20%) of people in the UK lived in poverty. In their report, the JRF said that over the last 25 years, children have had the highest poverty rates. Despite this, poverty in children has still gone down significantly, going from about a third (34%) of all children living in poverty to what it is today (27%). Teach First
Teach First (also Teach First Cymru) is a social enterprise registered as a charity which aims to address educational disadvantage in England and Wales. Teach First coordinates an employment-based teaching training programme whereby participants achieve Qualified Teacher Status through the participation in a two-year training programme that involves the completion of a PGDE along with wider leadership skills training and an optional master's degree. Trainees are placed at participating primary and secondary schools where they commit to stay for the duration of the 2-year training programme. Eligible schools are those where more than half of the pupils come from the poorest 30% of families according to the Income Deprivation Affecting Children Index. William Fiennes (author)
William John Fiennes FRSL (born 7 August 1970) is an English author best known for his memoirs ''The Snow Geese'' (2002) and ''The Music Room'' (2009). Early life and education Fiennes was born into the aristocratic Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes family and raised in 14th-century Broughton Castle in Oxfordshire, the youngest of five children of Nathaniel Fiennes, 21st Baron Saye and Sele (1920−2024) and Mariette Salisbury-Jones (b. 1935). The artist Susannah Fiennes and the 22nd Baron Saye and Sele are his twin siblings, and his maternal grandfather was the soldier and courtier Guy Salisbury-Jones. Cranford Community College is a secondary school with academy status in the London Borough of Hounslow, England. History The school first opened as Woodfield Secondary School. After the Education Act 1944, Spring Grove Central School and the council senior schools became secondary modern schools.
