First Baptist Church (Stamford, Texas)
First Baptist Church is a Baptist church at E. Oliver and N. Swenson in Stamford, Texas. It is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention. Built in 1908, the church is a large, domed structure built on a Greek Cross form and covered with buff-colored brick. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 24, 1986, and designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1989. A two-story educational building was added in 1932 and another educational wing in 1960. The First Baptist Church was organized in Stamford in early 1900. Stamford, Texas
Stamford is a city on the border of Jones County, Texas, Jones and Haskell County, Texas, Haskell counties in west-central Texas, United States. The population was 2,907 at the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. Henry McHarg, president of the Texas Central Railroad, named the site in 1900 for his hometown of Stamford, Connecticut. The city is home to the Texas Cowboy Reunion. Stamford is on U.S. Route 277#Texas, US 277 and Texas State Highway 6, SH 6. Most of the city is in Jones County. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark (RTHL) is a designation awarded by the Texas Historical Commission for historically and architecturally significant properties in the U.S. state of Texas. RTHL is a legal designation and the highest honor the state can bestow on a historic structure. Purchase and display of a historical marker is a required component of the RTHL designation process. Because it is a legal designation, owners of RTHL-designated structures must give 60 days' notice before any alterations are made to the exterior of the structure. Changes that are unsympathetic may result in removal of the designation and historical marker. More than 3,600 RTHL structures are spread throughout the state. Neocolonial Architecture
The Colonial Revival architectural style seeks to revive elements of American colonial architecture. The beginnings of the Colonial Revival style are often attributed to the Centennial Exhibition of 1876, which reawakened Americans to the architectural traditions of their colonial past. Fairly small numbers of Colonial Revival homes were built –1910, a period when Queen Anne-style architecture was dominant in the United States. Frank Shelby Groner (January 7, 1877 – November 8, 1943) was an American lawyer, pastor of Baptist churches, chairman of the Southern Baptist Hospital Commission, executive secretary of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, director of fund-raising in Texas for the Southern Baptist Convention, founder of the Baptist Student Division and the Department of Evangelism, president of the College of Marshall, Texas (now East Texas Baptist University), and author of several religious books.
