First-class Marksman (painting)
''First-class Marksman'' (1946) is a painting by the Australian painter Sidney Nolan. The painting depicts the figure of Ned Kelly in solid black armour, Nolan's most recognisable motif, firing a rifle against the Australian landscape. The title refers to an incident that took place in Victoria's Stringybark Creek, when Kelly and his gang were practising their marksmanship, firing hundreds of rounds at surrounding trees from a bullet-proof hide-out. Dubbed "the missing Nolan", the work was the only painting in Nolan's first series of 27 Ned Kelly paintings not in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia or Heide Museum of Modern Art. Sidney Nolan
Sir Sidney Robert Nolan (22 April 191728 November 1992) was one of the leading Australian artists of the 20th century. Working in a wide variety of media, his oeuvre is among the most diverse and prolific in all of modern art. He is best known for his series of paintings on legends from Australian history, most famously that of Ned Kelly, the bushranger and outlaw. Nolan's stylised depiction of Kelly's armour has become an icon of Australian art. Ripolin
Ripolin is a brand of paint. It was the first commercially available brand of enamel paint. Ripolin, a brand of commercial ready-mixed paints formulated for architectural, marine and other applications, originated in the Netherlands where it was developed by the chemist Carl Julius Ferdinand Riep. In 1897, the Briegleb paint company, as it was then known, formed a partnership with the French firm Lefranc, a manufacturer of artists’ materials. The merged company was named Ripolin, in honor of Riep, and a Ripolin factory was established in France. Ripolin paints became sufficiently renowned during the period that “ripolin” became synonymous with enamel paints in general and entered the French dictionary as early as 1907. Alkyd
An alkyd is a polyester resin modified by the addition of fatty acids and other components. Alkyds are derived from polyols and organic acids including dicarboxylic acids or carboxylic acid anhydride and triglyceride oils. The term ''alkyd'' is a modification of the original name "alcid", reflecting the fact that they are derived from ''alc''ohol and organic ac''id''s. The inclusion of a fatty acid confers a tendency to form flexible coatings. Alkyds are used in paints, varnishes and in moulds for casting. Ned Kelly
Edward Kelly (December 185411 November 1880) was an Australian bushranger, outlaw, gang leader, bank robber and convicted police-murderer. One of the last bushrangers, he is known for wearing armour of the Kelly gang, a suit of bulletproof armour during his final shootout with the police. Kelly was born and raised in rural Colony of Victoria, Victoria, the third of eight children to Irish parents. His father, a Convicts in Australia, transported convict, died in 1866, leaving Kelly, then aged 12, as the eldest male of the household. The Kellys were a poor selection (Australian history), selector family who saw themselves as downtrodden by the squattocracy and as victims of persecution by the Victoria Police. Stringybark Creek
Stringybark Creek is a small creek in the Wombat Ranges, Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia. It is famous for the place where three policemen were murdered on the 26th of October 1878. The Police officer, policemen, Sergeant Michael Kennedy, Constable Thomas Lonigan, and Constable Michael Scanlan were searching the forest for the Kelly brothers, Ned Kelly, Ned and Dan Kelly (bushranger), Dan Kelly. They were wanted for the attempted murder of another policeman, Ned Kelly#Fitzpatrick Incident, Constable Fitzpatrick. The creek is in the Toombullup State Forest, 50km from Benalla, Victoria, Benalla and 36km from Mansfield, Victoria, Mansfield. The area has been developed for visitors and includes picnic area, camping, toilets and walking tracks. A memorial stone was put in place in 2001. It is near the remains of the hut.
