Area code 251 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for southwestern Alabama, serving Mobile, Baldwin, and Washington counties and parts of six other counties. It was created on June 18, 2001, as a split from area code 334. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and location information about more than two million physical and cultural features, encompassing the United States and its territories; the Compact of Free Association, associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau; and Antarctica. It is a type of gazetteer. It was developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the United States Board on Geographic Names (BGN) to promote the standardization of feature names. Mary Evelyn Edwards Hunter
Mary Evelyn V. Edwards Hunter (August 11, 1885 – March 4, 1967) was an American educator and advocate. Early life Hunter was born the fifteenth of seventeen children, on August 11, 1885, in Finchburg, Alabama, to Elijah E. and Frances Edwards (née Moore). As a child, she worked as a bookkeeper for her father's businesses, and taught literacy to adults. She married high school principal J. A. Hunter as a teenager. They both moved to La Porte, Texas, and had 3 children together, including John. He died before the children became adults. Career Hunter attended Prairie View A&M University to gain teaching credentials, receiving her Bachelor of Science in 1926. She was also one of the first two black members of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service. With the group, she helped grow the membership to nearly 30,000 women of all races. Amasa Coleman Lee
Amasa Coleman Lee (July 19, 1880 – April 15, 1962) was an American newspaper editor, politician, and lawyer. He was the father of acclaimed novelist Harper Lee. Family Lee was born in Georgiana, Butler County, Alabama, in 1880 to Cader Alexander Lee, a Confederate veteran, and his wife, the former Theodosia Windham. He was distantly related to Robert E. Lee. He was raised on a farm in or near Chipley, Washington County, Florida due south of Butler County. Though he had few years of formal education (and none at a college), Lee passed the Alabama teacher's exam, and moved to Monroe County, Alabama to teach. On 22 June 1910, Lee married Frances Cunningham Finch (1888-1951), the daughter of a local postmaster in Monroe County, the unincorporated community of Finchburg being named after an ancestor.
