Ferniegair is a village across the Avon Water from Hamilton, Scotland, Hamilton, on the A72 road, A72 road to Larkhall in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The village contains the entrance to Chatelherault Country Park and Hamilton Golf Club. The railway station was re-opened in late 2005 and named Chatelherault railway station, Chatelherault (the original Ferniegair station had closed in 1917). The M74 motorway passes a short distance north of the village, with the River Clyde further north from that. Chatelherault Railway Station
Chatelherault railway station serves the villages of Ferniegair and Allanton, South Lanarkshire, Allanton on the outskirts of Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is named Chatelherault after the nearby Chatelherault Country Park. History The station was opened as Ferniegair on 1 December 1866 as a terminus for trains approaching from the south on the Caledonian Railway's Coalburn Branch. Passengers for Glasgow had to transfer to Hamilton by coach. It was rebuilt and relocated as a through station on 2 October 1876, with trains continuing to Motherwell railway station on the Clydesdale Junction Railway. The Caledonian Railway closed the station on 1 January 1917, though the line itself continued to carry passengers until October 1965 and freight until 1968. Re-opening The station is on the Argyle Line, and was officially re-opened on 9 December 2005 by First Minister Jack McConnell as part of the extension of the Argyle Line to include Larkhall. Avon Water
Avon Water, also known locally as the River Avon, is a river in Scotland, and a tributary of the River Clyde. Course The Avon Water rises in the hills on the boundary between East Ayrshire and South Lanarkshire, close to the head of the Irvine Water. The river flows in a north easterly direction, following the A71 road past Drumclog, and running to the south of Strathaven, where the river enters a more pronounced valley. The Avon flows between the village of Glassford, and Stonehouse to the south, before merging with the smaller Cander Water just south of Larkhall. The river then skirts the west side of Larkhall in a deepening gorge, crossed by the disused Larkhall railway viaduct, built in 1904 for the Caledonian Railway. Beyond this the gorge is part of Chatelherault Country Park, to the south of Hamilton. Larkhall (, ) is a town in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, around southeast of Glasgow. It is twinned with Seclin in northern France. Larkhall sits on high ground between the River Clyde to the East and the Avon Water to the West. Larkhall sits on the edge of the scenic Clyde valley and is a commuter town for Glasgow.
