Fernando Peña Defilló
Fernando Peña Defilló (1926 – 18 May 2016) was a Dominican Republican artist. Biography Peña Defilló was born in 1926 in Santo Domingo into a white family of Spanish ancestry (by his father, he had colonial Canarian heritage, and by his mother, Catalan descent). His father, Manuel Arturo Peña Batlle (1902–1954), was a lawyer, historian and diplomat who served as President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Dominican Republic (1942–1943) and as Minister of Foreign Affairs (1943–1946); his mother was Carmelita Defilló Sanz, a cousin of Catalan musician Pau Casals Defilló. He studied at the National School of Fine Arts from 1949 to 1951, where he received education from Josep Gausachs, José Vela Zanetti, and Celeste Woss y Gil. ''Listín Diario'' (Lit. ''Small Daily List'') is one of the leading newspapers in the Dominican Republic, and the oldest still being published. History ''Listín Diario'' was founded as ''Listín Diario Marítimo'' on 1 August 1889 by Arturo Pellerano Alfau and Julian Atiles, two merchants who endeavored to inform the general public of the arrival and departure of merchant ships into Dominican ports. Soon after what began as a single page became a broadsheet newspaper, printed out of the Pellerano & Atiles offices in the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo. Ciudad Colonial (; ) is the historic central neighborhood of the Dominican Republic's capital Santo Domingo. Celeste Agustina Woss y Gil (5 May 1891 – 1985) was a Dominican painter, educator, and feminist activist, remembered as one of the most influential Dominican artists from the 20th century. Born in Santo Domingo and daughter to former president Alejandro Woss y Gil, she was 12 years old when her family left the country in exile after her father's second presidential term ended in 1903.
