Ferenc Károlyi
Count Ferenc Károlyi de Nagykároly (20 June 1705 – 14 August 1758), was a Hungarian nobleman and soldier. Early life Károlyi was born on 20 June 1705 at his family's castle in Olcsva in the Kingdom of Hungary (1526–1867), Kingdom of Hungary. He was the only surviving son of Count Sándor Károlyi, Sándor Károlyi de Nagykároly (1669–1743) and Countess Krisztina Barkóczy de Szalai (1671–1724). His elder brother, László, had been appointed by King Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor, Leopold I of Hungary at the age of 13 as the hereditary governor of Szatmár County in the event of his father's resignation or death, but predeceased their father in 1710. His sister, Countess Klára Károlyi de Nagykároly, was the wife of Count Gábor Haller de Hallerkeõ. Count (feminine: countess) is a historical title of nobility in certain European countries, varying in relative status, generally of middling rank in the hierarchy of nobility. Pine, L. G. Especially in earlier medieval periods the term often implied not only a certain status, but also that the ''count'' had specific responsibilities or offices. The etymologically related English term " county" denoted the territories associated with some countships, but not all. The title of ''count'' is typically not used in England or English-speaking countries, and the term ''earl'' is used instead. A female holder of the title is still referred to as a ''countess'', however.
