Fentress, Texas
Fentress is an unincorporated community in Caldwell County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had an estimated population of 291 in 2000. The community is part of the Austin–Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was the setting for the novel '' The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate''. History Founded as Riverside in the later 1800s around a church, the community was renamed to Fentress in 1982. The population was 291 by 2000 but had declined to 86 in 2010. After the death of President George H. W. Bush, skydivers above Fentress made the number 41 in the sky as a tribute to him. Geography Fentress is situated at the junction of State Highway 80 and FM 20 in southwestern Caldwell County, approximately eight miles northwest of Luling and 15 miles southeast of San Marcos. State Highway 123 (SH 123) is a north–south state highway in Texas, United States, that connects U.S Route 181 (US 181) in Karnes City with Interstate 35 (I-35) in San Marcos. The route was initially proposed in 1927 and has had minimal changes to its routing since then. Route description SH 123 begins at an intersection with US 181 just south of Karnes City and proceeds northward along the town's eastern edge. The route intersects the Business Route of US 181 and Texas State Highway 80 as it passes through town. The road continues north through farmlands before reaching an intersection with US Route 87 in Stockdale. The route continues north through ranchlands until Seguin. The Prairie Lea Independent School District is a public school district based in the community of Prairie Lea, Texas, United States. In addition to Prairie Lea, the district also serves the communities of Fentress and Stairtown as well as rural areas in southwestern Caldwell County and a small portion of northeastern Guadalupe County. Prairie Lea ISD has one PK-12 campus, Prairie Lea School, with an annual enrollment of between 225 and 250 students. The district accepts transfers from other districts based upon the recommendations of the district transfer committee. The district does not assess a per pupil transfer fee. Lockhart is a city in and the county seat of Caldwell County, Texas, United States. According to the 2020 census, its population was 14,379. History The city of Lockhart is named after Byrd Lockhart, an assistant surveyor of Green DeWitt and reportedly the first Anglo to set foot in Caldwell County. Lockhart was the site of a victory of the Texans over the Comanche, at the Battle of Plum Creek in 1840. Lockhart was originally called "Plum Creek", but the name was later changed to Lockhart. The town's economic growth began with the arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century, when the town became a regional shipping center for local cotton. San Marcos River
The San Marcos River rises from the San Marcos Springs, the location of the Meadows Center for Water and the Environment (formerly Aquarena Springs), in San Marcos, Texas. The springs are home to several threatened or endangered species, including the Texas blind salamander, fountain darter, and Texas wild rice. The river is a popular recreational area, and is frequented for tubing, canoeing, swimming, and fishing. Course The river begins at San Marcos Springs, rising from the Edwards Aquifer into Spring Lake. Luling is a city in Caldwell County, Texas, Caldwell and Guadalupe County, Texas, Guadalupe counties, Texas, United States, along the San Marcos River. He was a personal friend of Thomas Wentworth Pierce and provided the financing for the railroad as well the purchase of the land that became Luling.
