Feilding is a town in the Manawatū District of the North Island of New Zealand. It is located on New Zealand State Highway 54, State Highway 54, 20 kilometres north of Palmerston North. The town is the seat of the Manawatū District Council. Feilding has won the annual New Zealand's Most Beautiful Town award 16 times. It is an Edwardian-themed town, with the district plan encouraging buildings in the CBD to be built in that style. The town is currently extending its CBD beautification featuring paving and planter boxes on the footpaths on the main streets in the CBD, including the realignment and beautification of Fergusson Street to the South Street entrance of Manfeild Park. The town is a service town for the surrounding farming district. The Feilding Saleyards has been a vital part of the wider Manawatū community for over 125 years. William Henry Adelbert Feilding
General William Henry Adelbert Feilding (6 January 1836 – 25 March 1895) was a British soldier of the Coldstream Guards. Feilding was a son of William Feilding, 7th Earl of Denbigh and his wife Lady Mary Elizabeth Kitty Moreton. He served in the Crimean War and was British commissioner to the French Army during the Franco-Prussian War. He was decorated in the field by General Chanzy with the Legion d'honneur for saving the wounded under fire in a burning hospital. He became a Colonel in the Coldstream Guards and was Inspector-General of the Recruiting HQ from 1891 to 1894. The town of Feilding in New Zealand was named after him. In 1871, the Directors of the Emigrant and Colonist's Aid Corporation began to look at selecting a block of land so they could proceed with their proposed emigration scheme for the labouring class. Manawatū District (officially Manawatu District) is a Districts of New Zealand, territorial authority district in the Manawatū-Whanganui Regions of New Zealand, local government region in the North Island of New Zealand, administered by Manawatu District Council. New Zealand State Highway 54
State Highway 54 (SH 54) is a New Zealand state highway that runs across nearly all of the Manawatū District in the North Island. It runs from at Vinegar Hill (near Hunterville) to near Palmerston North. The highway connects the Manawatū District's chief town, Feilding, to the New Zealand state highway network and forms an alternative route to SH 1 and SH 3 between the North Island Volcanic Plateau and Palmerston North. Route SH 54 begins at a junction with near the locality of Vinegar Hill, east-north-east of Hunterville. It steeply descends to cross the Rangitīkei River before proceeding generally southwards, winding along the eastern side of the Rangitīkei Valley. Ngāti Kauwhata
Ngāti Kauwhata is a Māori people, Māori ''iwi'' (tribe) of the Manawatu District, Manawatū area of New Zealand. In the 2018 New Zealand census, 1,734 people listed Ngāti Kauwhata as their iwi. Ancestors of the iwi came to New Zealand on the Tainui (canoe), Tainui waka. They originally lived around Maungatautari in the Waikato. Large numbers of them migrated to the southern North Island in the 1820s. Mason Durie (community leader), Mason Durie was a prominent leader in the 20th century. The iwi has two main marae, Kauwhata Marae (Kai Iwi Pā) and Aorangi Marae. There was formerly another marae, "Te Iwa Tekau mā Iwa". Rangitīkei (New Zealand Electorate)
Rangitīkei (before 2008 spelled Rangitikei without a macron) is a New Zealand parliamentary electorate, returning one Member of Parliament to the New Zealand House of Representatives. The current MP for Rangitīkei is Suze Redmayne of the National Party. She has held this position since 2023. The electorate has existed continuously since the 1861 general election. Manawatū Plains
The Manawatū Plains is an area of low-lying land in New Zealand, located on the floodplains of the Manawatū and Rangitīkei Rivers. It is some of the most fertile lands in the southwestern North Island. Stretching from the northern Horowhenua around Levin in the south to Marton in the north, the triangular area of land extends inland from the South Taranaki Bight to almost as far as Ashhurst at the mouth of the Manawatū Gorge. It covers an area of around . In the south, around Lake Horowhenua, the plains were once an extensive wetland, which has been largely drained and turned into profitable dairy farming land. There are conservation moves in progress to restore some of these wetlands to their former state. Māori People
Māori () are the Indigenous peoples of Oceania, indigenous Polynesians, Polynesian people of mainland New Zealand.
