FK Širvėna Biržai
Futbolo klubas Širvėna, commonly known as Širvėna, is a Football in Lithuania, Lithuanian Football (soccer), football club located in Biržai, center of Biržai District Municipality, Biržai District. They played in the II Lyga, Western zone, the third tier of Lithuanian football from 2013 to 2018. In Soviet occupations, it was in Pirma lyga (second tier). History Club was created in 1948 as part of the republican sports union "Žalgiris". From 1954 club was renamed "Siūlas" by the sponsorship reasons. During the Soviet occupation in Lithuania, the ownership and sponsorship of the club was consistently changing. The team's "Silver age" was five seasons, year after year, when in 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957 became runners-up in "B" klasė (second tier) championship. In 1978 and 1984 seasons in team played currently well known football manager Saulius Širmelis. In 1990, the club was resurrected. In 1991 changed name to Širvėna. Biržai (, also known by several #Name, alternative names) is a city in northern Lithuania. Famous for its reconstructed Biržai Castle Manor house, manor, the whole region is renowned for its many traditional-recipe beer breweries. Name The exact origin of the city name is not known, but it is derived from the Lithuanian language, Lithuanian word (which means ''birch''). The name of the city in other languages includes ; , (and pre-1917 ); . It is simplified to ''Birzai'' in English. History The city's first written mention dates to 1455. The construction of Biržai Castle began in 1586, and the town was granted Magdeburg Rights in 1589. In 1575, as preparation for the castle's construction, a dam was built at the confluence of the Agluona River, Agluona and Apaščia Rivers, and the artificial Lake Širvėna, covering about , was created.
