Eromanga is an outback town and locality in the Shire of Quilpie, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Eromanga had a population of 119 people. Geography The town lies on the edge of what is called the Eromanga Inland Sea, which existed in the Early Cretaceous. The Eromanga region has abundant oil wells and opal mines. Dinosaur fossils, including Australia's largest dinosaur a titanosaur species of sauropod, have also been found here making it an area of interest for palaeontologists. It is located on Ngandangara territory. Eromanga has been touted as the town in Australia located the farthest from any ocean. Eromanga Basin
The Eromanga Basin is a large Mesozoic sedimentary basin in central and northern Australia. It covers parts of Queensland, the Northern Territory, South Australia, and New South Wales, and is a major component of the Great Artesian Basin. The Eromanga Basin covers 1,000,000 km2 and overlaps part of the Cooper Basin. The basin is made of sandstone, siltstone, mudstone, coal, shale, and red beds. Two impact structures have been identified in the basin, Mount Toondina crater and Tookoonooka crater. In Queensland and South Australia the Eromanga Basin has been explored and developed for petroleum production. Commercial quantities of gas were first discovered in 1976 and oil in 1978. The basin contains Australia's largest onshore oilfield, the Jackson oil field. Moomba is the centre of South Australia's oil production in the basin. Epicontinental Sea
An inland sea (also known as an epeiric sea or an epicontinental sea) is a continental body of water which is very large and is either completely surrounded by dry land or connected to an ocean by a river, strait, or "arm of the sea". Erromango is the fourth largest island in the Vanuatu archipelago. With a land area of it is the largest island in Tafea Province, the southernmost of Vanuatu's six administrative regions. Name The Exonym and endonym, endonym for Erromango in Erromanga language, Erromangan is ''Nelocompne''. There are several accounts of how 'Erromango' came into common usage: firstly, an oral history from the Potnarvin area tells of how Captain James Cook was given a yam during his visit in August 1774, and was told in the (now-extinct) Sorung language, Sorung language ''armai n'go, armai n'go'' ('this food is good'), and mistakenly assumed this to be the name of the island. A second account is related by the naturalist Georg Forster, who accompanied Cook. He writes that he learned the name 'Irromanga' from a man named Fannòko, while visiting the neighbouring island of Tanna (island), Tanna five days later. Erromanga Language
Erromangan, or Sie (Sye), is the primary language spoken on the island Erromango in the Tafea region of the Vanuatu islands. The other Erromanga languages are either moribund or extinct. Although the island is quite large (887 km²), the total number of speakers of Erromango is estimated at around 1900. Linguistic situation Sye is close to being the only language on Erromango. There were once four—Sye, Sorung, Ura and Utaha—but the latter three are extinct apart from a handful of recently discovered Ura speakers. Terry Crowley counted six speakers of Ura in the mid-1990s. The South Vanuatu language group includes these four languages. Erromango Island was once much more diverse linguistically.
