Eric Cremin
Eric James Cremin (15 June 1914 – 29 December 1973) was an Australian professional golfer who, later in his career, was instrumental in the establishment of the Far East Circuit, later known as the Asia Golf Circuit. Cremin was born in Mascot, New South Wales. He played mostly in Australasia, only occasionally travelling to Europe to compete, but enjoyed great success on the Australian circuit, including victories in the 1949 Australian Open and the 1937 and 1938 Australian PGA Championship. After World War II, Cremin was runner-up in the Australian PGA Championship a further seven times, including 1946 to 1948 consecutively. In 1959, Cremin and a Welsh international golfer, Kim Hall, established a tournament in Hong Kong to provide an additional event for the Australian professionals who were travelling to play in the Philippine Open. Mascot, New South Wales
Mascot is a suburb in the Inner-South of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Mascot is located 7 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district and is one of the administrative centres of the Bayside Council. A small part of Mascot is located in the Inner West Council. Mascot is on the north-west side of Botany Bay and contains Sydney Airport. History The first land grants in the area were made in 1835, with market gardening being the main land use. Subdivision followed the construction of Botany Road in 1875 and a municipality known as North Botany was formed in 1888. A racecourse operated in this area in 1904 on land that was formerly owned by the Australian Golf Club. The race course was known as Ascot, named after its famous counterpart in England. Victorian PGA Championship
The Victorian PGA Championship is a golf tournament played in Victoria, Australia. It has been part of the PGA Tour of Australasia each season since 2009. It is the oldest of the state professional championships, having been first held in 1922. History The first Victorian Professional Championship was held in November 1922 and was open to any professional in Australia and New Zealand. It was a 72-hole stroke-play event with 36 holes played at Royal Melbourne on 6 November and 36 holes played at Victoria Golf Club two day later. It attracted a number of New South Wales players as well as the professionals from Victoria. Billy Iles and Dan Soutar, one of the NSW players, were tied on 158 after the first day's play. Soutar won after the second day with a score of 313, a stroke ahead of Tom Howard, another NSW professional, with Iles dropping back to third place. Vicars Shield
The Vicars Shield was a professional team golf competition between the states of Australia. It was first played in 1930 and continued as an interstate event until 1956. It was the professional equivalent of the amateur Australian Men's Interstate Teams Matches, which had been held since 1904. The trophy was donated by Sir William Vicars. In 1957 and 1958, the event was replaced with a "north" against "south" match before being abandoned. The shield was later reused for the interstate club professionals' competition, as part of the Australian Club Professional Championship. History The first event was held at the Metropolitan Golf Club in 1930 between South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. Ampol Tournament
The Ampol Tournament was the richest golf event of its time in Australia. From 1952 the sponsor, Ampol, offered great prize money to attract the leading American and European players to compete. Total prize money was initially A£1,000, rising to A£1,300 in 1951. In 1952 and 1954, two tournaments were arranged a few weeks apart. Prize money was A£3,500 for each of the 1952 events while each of the 1954 events had prize money of A£1,500. The A£10,000 in 1956 was the biggest purse outside the United States. Prize money was A£2,500 in 1953 and 1955 and A£3,000 in 1957 and 1959. Prize money often exceeded the advertised figures since part of the proceeds from gate receipts was sometimes added. The McWilliam's Wines Tournament was a golf tournament held in Australia from 1949 to 1953, played at The Australian Golf Club. Norman Von Nida Norman Guy Von Nida (14 February 1914 – 20 May 2007) was an Australian professional golfer. Von Nida was born in Strathfield and grew up in Brisbane. Adelaide Advertiser Tournament
The Adelaide Advertiser Tournament was a golf event played in Adelaide, Australia between 1948 and 1967. Up to 1960 the event was played in March or April but was later played in September or October. The venue generally alternated between Royal Adelaide Golf Club and Kooyonga Golf Club. Prize money was £500 from 1948 to 1952, £1,000 from 1953 to 1964, £1,500 in 1965 and A$3,000 in 1966 and 1967. Adelaide Advertiser Special Tournament An extra event was played in October 1952 called the Adelaide Advertiser Special Tournament with prize money of £1,000. It was played at Kooyonga Golf Club with a first prize of £350. The tournament was organised because of the visit of a team of four American golfers; Jimmy Demaret, Lloyd Mangrum, Ed Oliver (golfer), Ed Oliver and Jim Turnesa. Lakes Open
The Lakes Open was a golf tournament played at The Lakes Golf Club in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia between 1934 and 1974. The inaugural event was organised in connection with the visit of a group of American professionals who had earlier played in the Lakes International Cup. It was held annually until World War II with Jim Ferrier and Norman Von Nida both winning twice. It did not restart until 1947 and was held annually until 1967, except for 1965. The event was revived in 1974 as the Coca-Cola Lakes Open. The Western Australian Open, also known as the WA Open, is a golf tournament on the PGA Tour of Australasia. It had been a tour event every year since 2009 with the exception of 2019. History The first Western Australian Amateur Championship was held in 1911. This consisted of a 36-hole stroke-play qualification stage, played in a single day, followed by match-play to determine the champion. The leading four players in the stroke-play qualified in 1911, increasing to 8 in 1912. In 1913 the stroke-play stage was opened up to professionals, becoming the first Western Australian Open Championship. It was played at the Fremantle links on 28 August, nearly 30 players competing. The New South Wales Open is an annual golf tournament held in New South Wales, Australia. The event was founded in 1931 as the New South Wales Close Championship, being restricted to residents of New South Wales, becoming the New South Wales Open Championship in 1958 when it was opened up to players from outside New South Wales. Norman Von Nida won the event six times, while Jim Ferrier and Frank Phillips won it five times with Greg Norman winning it four times. History The event was founded in 1931 as the New South Wales Close Championship, being restricted to residents of New South Wales. Queensland Open (golf)
The Queensland Open is a golf tournament held in Queensland, Australia as part of the PGA Tour of Australasia. It was founded in 1925. The event was not held from 2008 to 2012 but returned as a PGA Tour of Australasia event in 2013. Trophy The winner receives the T. B. Hunter Cup. The trophy was donated by Thomas Brown Hunter in 1939, the winner to retain it for a year and receive a replica. The trophy was inscribed with the name of the previous winners. Hunter was secretary of Brisbane Golf Club from 1910 to 1938 and also secretary of the Queensland Golf Association. He won the Queensland Amateur Championship in 1913.
