Emmett Paige Jr.
Emmett Paige Jr. (20 February 1931 – 31 August 2017) served as the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Networks and Information Integration, United States Assistant Secretary of Defense for Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence from 1993 to 1997. He retired from active duty in the United States Army as a lieutenant general (United States), lieutenant general in 1988 after 41 years of military service. Early life and education Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Paige dropped out of Stanton College Preparatory School, Stanton High School and joined the U.S. Army in August 1947 at the age of sixteen. He graduated from Signal Corps (United States Army), Signal Corps Officer Candidate School in July 1952 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. The Assistant Secretary of Defense for Networks & Information Integration (ASD(NII)) was an appointed position that provided management and oversight of all DoD information technology, including national security systems. The ASD(NII) also served as the chief information officer (CIO) of the United States Department of Defense (DoD), a position distinct from the ASD and governed by the Clinger-Cohen Act.
