Elend, Saxony-Anhalt
Elend is a district of the town of Oberharz am Brocken in the Harz District, in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It lies in the Bode valley in the High Harz in central Germany, at a height of . This part of the valley is known locally as ''Elendstal''. Elend is located near the former Inner German Border between West and East Germany. Geography About 3 kilometres west of the village is the nature reserve of Kramershai. Climate History Walther Grosse mentions fields ''under the Elend Road'' (''unter dem elendischen Wege'') for the first time in a manuscript of field names in the '' Amt'' of Elbingerode for 1483. In a ''Vogtei'' account for the ''Amt'' of Elbingerode (Harz) dated 1506/07 there is an entry which states: ''"Income from the sawmill at Elend in the Forest XII March"'' (''Innome von der Sagemoln zum Elende deß Forst XII Mar '). Erichsburg
The Ericsburg in the village of the same name in the borough of Dassel in Lower Saxony, Germany, is a castle that was built in the 16th century within the Principality of Calenberg. It is currently (2007) in a poor state of repair. Location The castles was built in a marshy depression. It is of the type known as a lowland castle. Site Erichsburg The Erichsburg was formerly guarded by a wide moat and high ramparts. Next to it was a cultivated outwork (''Vorwerk''). Earlier castle Its predecessor was Hunnesrück Castle, which the counts of Dassel had built in the 13th century. In 1521 during the Hildesheim Diocesan Feud it was bombarded with heavy cannon from the heights of Hatop and captured by Eric I together with Henry the Younger of Wolfenbüttel. Benneckenstein () is a town in the district of Harz, in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Since 1 January 2010, it has been part of the town of Oberharz am Brocken. Benneckenstein is in the eastern Harz, 14 km southeast of Braunlage, and 24 km south of Wernigerode. Location Benneckenstein lies in the Lower Harz within the Harz/Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park.
