Elegies (William Finn)
''Elegies'' is a song cycle by William Finn about the deaths of friends and family and is a response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. ''Elegies'' premiered at Lincoln Center in 2003 and has been performed in many other venues. Productions The song cycle premiered at Lincoln Center, the Newhouse Theater (New York City), running from March 2, 2003 to April 19, 2003. Directed by Graciela Daniele, the cast starred Christian Borle, Betty Buckley, Carolee Carmello, Keith Byron Kirk, and Michael Rupert. The production was recorded nearly complete and released on compact disc by Fynsworth Alley (distributed through Varèse Sarabande). Themes Most of the songs were composed in memory of Finn's friends, several of whom died of AIDS. Three songs deal specifically with the passing of his mother, Barbara Finn. The final set of songs deal with the collapse of the World Trade Center and its emotional aftermath. In a review of a regional production in 2004, the reviewer wrote: "Never ... William Finn
William Alan Finn (born February 28, 1952) is an American composer and lyricist. He is best known for his musicals, which include ''Falsettos'', for which he won the 1992 Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical, ''A New Brain'' (1998), and ''The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee'' (2005). Early life Finn was born in Boston, Massachusetts. World Trade Center (1973–2001)
The original World Trade Center (WTC) was a large complex of seven buildings in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan in New York City. It opened on April 4, 1973, and was destroyed in 2001 during the September 11 attacks. At the time of their completion, the Twin Towers—the original 1 World Trade Center (the North Tower) at ; and 2 World Trade Center (the South Tower) at —were the tallest buildings in the world. Other buildings in the complex included the Marriott World Trade Center (3 WTC), 4 WTC, 5 WTC, 6 WTC, and 7 WTC. The complex contained of office space. The core complex was built between 1966 and 1975, at a cost of $400 million (equivalent to $3.56 billion in 2022). Peter Caulfield (actor)
Peter Caulfield (born 13 June 1984) is an English actor. Training and early career Caulfield trained at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (the Paul McCartney "Fame" school). Whilst training he was part of a small theatre company, Hedgehog, led by director Jamie Lloyd. The company went on to win numerous awards at the National Student Drama Festival with their production of ''Falsettoland''. The production then played to sold out audiences at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Caulfield started his professional career in the West End. His first production was the musical '' Our House'', with music by the band Madness and a script by Tim Firth. The show won a Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical. Jamie Lloyd (born 1980 in Poole, Dorset) is a British director, best known for his work with his eponymous theatre company (The Jamie Lloyd Company). The Arts Theatre is a theatre in Great Newport Street, in Westminster, Central London. History It opened on 20 April 1927 as a members-only club for the performance of unlicensed plays, thus avoiding theatre censorship by the Lord Chamberlain's office. Bolek Greczynski
Bolek (died 1819), also spelled as Boleck or Bolechs, and known as Bowlegs by European Americans, was a Seminole principal chief, of the Alachua chiefly line. He was the younger brother of King Payne, who succeeded their father Cowkeeper (known to the Seminole as ''Ahaya'') as leading or principal chief in Florida. Bolek succeeded King Payne in 1812 when he was killed. Early life and education Bolek was one of several children born to Ahaya ( Cowkeeper) and his wife. Ricky Ian Gordon (born May 15, 1956) is an American composer of art song, opera and musical theatre. Life Gordon was born in Oceanside, New York. He was raised by his mother, Eve, and father, Sam, and he grew up on Long Island with his three sisters, Susan, Lorraine and Sheila. Jack Eric Williams
Jack Eric Williams (March 28, 1944 – January 28, 1994) was an American actor, composer and lyricist for stage and film. He is most remembered for originating the role of Beadle Bamford in Stephen Sondheim's ''Sweeney Todd''. Williams died in New York City on January 28, 1994, from cardiac arrest due to complications of diabetes. Joseph Papp
Joseph Papp (born Joseph Papirofsky; June 22, 1921 – October 31, 1991) was an American theatrical producer and director. He established The Public Theater in what had been the Astor Library Building in Lower Manhattan. There Papp created a year-round producing home to focus on new plays and musicals.
