Electoral District Of Orange
Orange is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. It is a regional electorate that covers four local government areas in their entirety: the City of Orange, Cabonne Council, Parkes Shire and Forbes Shire. The seat has been held by Philip Donato since a by-election in November 2016. Donato was initially elected as a member of the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party but resigned in 2022 and became an Independent. History Orange was created in 1859. Orange and Hartley were absorbed into Bathurst, which elected three members under proportional representation, between 1920 and 1927. In 1927 Bathurst, Hartley and Orange were recreated as single-member electorates. The area tilts strongly toward the National Party, as Labor hasn't held the seat since 1947, although it came close to winning at the 1996 by-election. Philip Donato
Philip Donato (born 1972) is an Australian politician. He was a Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from November 2016 to December 2022, and subsequently an independent, representing the electorate of Orange.) Andrew Gee (politician)
Andrew Robert Gee (born 13 September 1968) is an Australian politician who served as the Minister for Veterans' Affairs and Minister for Defence Personnel in the Morrison Government from 2021 to 2022. He was previously the Minister for Decentralisation and Regional Education from 2020 to 2021. He is a member of the National Party and has represented the Division of Calare in the House of Representatives since 2016. He previously served in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2016, representing the seat of Orange. Early life Gee was born on 13 September 1968 in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales. James Torpy
James Torpy (1832 – 22 June 1903) was an Irish-born Australian politician. He was born at Fermoy in County Cork to miller James Torpy and Jane Mortimer. After working in Manchester and Liverpool he moved to Victoria in 1853, mining successfully in Victoria and New South Wales near Sofala. He owned interests around Lambing Flat and was arrested in 1861 for his role in the anti-Chinese riots held there; he was acquitted of all charges. On 3 June 1862 he married Isabella Jane Walwyn, with whom he had eight children. He moved to Forbes in 1862 and later to Orange, where he continued to run hotels until 1876, when he visited Ireland. On his return he worked as a wine and spirits merchant, and also was the proprietor of the ''Western Daily Advocate'' from 1884. Thomas Dalton (Australian Politician)
Thomas Dalton (1 February 1829 – 26 June 1901) was an Irish-born Australian politician. He was born in Duntryleague in County Limerick to innkeeper James Dalton and Eleanor Ryan. He and his father moved to New South Wales in the late 1840s, and in 1858 Thomas and his brother James established a store at Orange. He married Elizabeth Fahey in 1856, with whom he had five children; a second marriage in 1880 to Mary Ann Josephine Walsh produced no children. He was a long-serving alderman at Orange, serving as mayor in 1877, and also expanded his business until his family wielded great influence in the colony. William Clarke (Australian Politician)
William Clarke (26 June 1843 – 9 March 1903) was an Australian businessman and member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. Clarke was born in Melbourne, son of William Joseph Sayers Clarke by his marriage with Miss Mary Ann Welsford. William Clarke married Mary Ann Mortimer on 25 June 1862 in Melbourne, later moving to Sydney. Clarke was a Justice of the Peace for the colonies of New South Wales and Victoria. On 24 November 1880 Clarke was elected member for Orange in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, until being defeated at the general election in January 1889. Clarke was Minister of Justice in the fourth ministry of Sir Henry Parkes, from 20 January 1887 to 10 January 1889. Andrew Taylor Kerr (10 November 1837 – 15 November 1907) was an Australian politician. He was born at Green Swamp near Bathurst to pastoralist Andrew Kerr and Elizabeth Livingstone. He worked on his father's station near Wellington, which he inherited with his sister on his father's death in 1866. On 18 March 1863 he married Isabel Helen Dunbar Johnson, with whom he had six children. He sold his property in 1877. Edward Combes
Edward Combes (6 September 1830 – 18 October 1895) was an engineer, pastoralist, politician and painter. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, and later the New South Wales Legislative Council. Combes entered the Government service of New South Wales in 1858. Four years later he was appointed Government Mining Engineer, and was returned to the Assembly as the member for Bathurst in 1872 and for Orange in 1875. Combes was Secretary for Public Works in the fourth Robertson ministry from August to December 1877, and in the following year was appointed Executive Commissioner for New South Wales at the Paris International Exhibition, his seat in Parliament being declared vacant because that was held to be an office of profit under the Crown. He was re-elected to parliament as the member for East Macquarie in August 1879, holding the seat until 1885. Harris Nelson
Harris Levi Nelson (1 January 1835 – 10 June 1883) was an Australian businessman, Justice of the Peace and politician who served as a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. Life History Born in Fordon, then in Prussia, to Joel Levy Nelson and his wife Rose, Harris Nelson migrated to Australia around 1857 and he was operating a store at Orange by 1860. He may have come due a family connection. His uncle, Benjamin Nelson (1813-1894), was a storekeeper, JP and twice mayor of Orange. As well as the store, Harris Nelson had other business interests in the district. He was a lessee of the Orange (flour) Mill. George McKay (Australian Politician)
George McKay (17 March 1819 – 30 July 1898) was a Scottish-born Australian politician. He was born on the Isle of Mull in Argyllshire and migrated to Sydney in 1838. He worked on a Bathurst farm before going to the California gold rushes, returning to Australia in 1851. In that year he married Margaret McLean, with whom he had nine children. After ten years as a publican at Orange, he became a farmer at Collwood and an alderman on Orange Council. William Forlonge
William Jack Forlonge (15 May 1813 – 15 September 1890) was a pastoralist and politician in colonial Victoria and New South Wales, a member of the Victorian Legislative Council, the Victorian Legislative Assembly and the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. Early life Forlonge was born in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of John and Eliza Forlonge. John Forlonge (died 1834) was a merchant in Glasgow and decided to send his two surviving sons to New South Wales, several of his children having earlier died from tuberculosis. William Forlonge, his brother Andrew and their mother went to Leipzig with his mother in 1826 where William worked in a wool sorting house for three years. John joined his family in 1828. James Martin (premier)
Sir James Martin, QC (14 May 1820 – 4 November 1886) was three times Premier of New South Wales, and Chief Justice of New South Wales from 1873 to 1886. Early career Martin was born in Midleton, County Cork, Ireland but emigrated with his parents to Sydney, Australia at the age of one. He was educated at Dame's School, Parramatta and, despite his family's poverty, the Sydney Academy and Sydney College under the tutelage of William Timothy Cape, and left school at the age of 16 to become a reporter.
