The Eastern District is a district of the Virginia High School League. The schools in the Eastern District compete in the 6A, 5A, and 4A divisions. Virginia High School League
The Virginia High School League (VHSL) is the principal sanctioning organization for interscholastic athletic competition among public high schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The VHSL first sponsored debate and also continues to sponsor state championships in several academic activities. Private and religious schools and teams of homeschooled students belong to other sanctioning organizations, the largest of which is the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association. Proposals in the Virginia General Assembly to mandate that the VHSL allow homeschooled students to compete for the public high school they would otherwise attend have failed to pass. Churchland High School
Churchland High School is a public high school in Portsmouth, Virginia in the United States. It is administered by Portsmouth Public Schools. The school colors are black and orange. The mascot is a "Trucker". Churchland is designated as a magnet school for the visual and performing arts, with subjects including dance, chorus, orchestra, band, drama, and the visual arts. Sports On January 21, 2023, a 22-year-old junior varsity assistant basketball coach impersonated a 13-year-old player during a game against Nansemond River High School. The coaches for the junior varsity team were fired after an investigation into the incident. The girls and junior varsity teams voted not to continue with their season and will forfeit future games. Granby High School
Granby High School (originally Granby Street High School) is a State school, public High school (North America), high school in Norfolk, Virginia. The school is part of the Norfolk Public Schools system. It is the only high school in the school division that offers an International Baccalaureate program. The school building is located on historic Granby Street where the south end is at Downtown Norfolk, Virginia, Downtown Norfolk and the north end where the beaches of Ocean View, Virginia, Ocean View lie. Granby is also less than a mile away from the historic Wards Corner, a local shopping and eating center. In 2010, ''Newsweek'' placed Granby in the top 1300 of "America's Top Public High Schools". Lake Taylor High School
Lake Taylor High School is a public high school located in Norfolk, Virginia and is the "Home of the Mighty Titans". It is administered by Norfolk City Public Schools. The school colors are red and black and its mascot is the Titans. Lake Taylor High is also the home to a NJROTC program and is called The Academy of Leadership and Military Science. Athletics The Titans play in the Eastern District. The football team, led by Hank Sawyer, has won numerous district titles throughout the last two decades, and won the Virginia state championship in 2012, 2014, and 2019. The football team also finished as runners-up in 1982, losing to George Washington-Danville, Salem Spartans in 2015, Woodgrove High School in 2018 and again in 2021 to Salem Spartans. Manor High School is a public high school located in Portsmouth, Virginia. In 1993, Manor’s original building was renamed Woodrow Wilson High School after it merged three schools until July 2021. It is administered by Portsmouth City Public Schools. The school colors are red, black and white, and the nickname is the Mustangs. History Manor can be traced back to 1885, when a high school was organized at The Academy on Glasgow Street, which had housed only grammar and elementary students from 1850 through 1884. The first high school class graduated that same year. In 1886 the Glasgow Street building was no longer suitable, so the city erected a new building on Green Street, known as the Green Street School. High school, grammar, and elementary students moved there from the Glasgow Street location in September 1886. Norview High School is a public high school in central Norfolk, Virginia. Norview High School is one of the five local high schools that serve the city. It is home of the Dodson Scholars Program and the Leadership Center for Science and Engineering program (or commonly referred to as LCSE).
