East Lampung Regency
East Lampung Regency is a regency (''kabupaten'') of Lampung Province, Sumatra, Indonesia. It has an area of 5,325.03 km2 and a population of 951,639 people at the 2010 census and 1,110,340 at the 2020 census. The regency seat is at the town of Sukadana. It contains the Way Kambas National Park and Satwa Elephant Eco Lodge. History In 1989, the Islamist civilians in Talangsari village of East Lampung Regency were massacred by Indonesian Army troops, in an event known as Talangsari incident. In January 2010 an outbreak of bird flu occurred in East Lampung Regency. Way Kambas National Park
Way Kambas National Park ( id, Taman Nasional Way Kambas, abbreviated TNWK) is a national park covering 1,300 square kilometres in Lampung province, southern Sumatra, Indonesia. It consists of swamp forest and lowland rain forest, mostly of secondary growth as result of extensive logging in the 1960s and 1970s. Despite decreasing populations, the park still has a few critically endangered Sumatran tigers, Sumatran elephants and Sumatran rhinoceroses. It also provides excellent birdwatching, with the rare white-winged wood duck among the over 400 species present in the park. Threats to the park are posed by poaching and habitat loss due to illegal logging. Conservation efforts include patrolling and the establishment of the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary and the Elephant Conservation Centre. In 2016, Way Kambas was formally declared an ASEAN Heritage Park. Influenza A virus subtype H5N1 (A/H5N1) is a subtype of the influenza A virus which can cause illness in humans and many other animal species. A bird-adapted strain of H5N1, called HPAI A(H5N1) for highly pathogenic avian influenza virus of type A of subtype H5N1, is the highly pathogenic causative agent of H5N1 flu, commonly known as avian influenza ("bird flu"). It is enzootic (maintained in the population) in many bird populations, especially in Southeast Asia. One strain of HPAI A(H5N1) is spreading globally after first appearing in Asia. Talangsari Incident
The Talangsari incident ( id, Peristiwa Talangsari) was an incident that occurred in the village of Talangsari, Lampung, Indonesia in 1989, where Islamist civilians were massacred by Indonesian Army troops. The civilians had formed an Islamist commune, which developed tensions with local residents and authorities. Background In late 1988 and early 1989, an Islamist group calling themselves the ''Jama'ah Mujahiddin Fisabilillah'' established a commune in the transmigrant hamlet of Talangsari III, in Lampung, where they had established themselves under Warsidi, a local quran teacher. Before long, tensions developed between the residents of the hamlet and the Islamists, resulting in some of the locals fleeing due to perceived threats.
