Eşref Özmenç
Eşref Özmenç (30 January 1930 – 1 January 1990) was a Turkish international association football player, who most notably was a part of Beşiktaş J.K. squad between the late 1940s and 1950s. He represented Turkey at senior level, earning 8 caps between 1951 and 1954. Career Started his career at Istanbul-based Kadırga S.K., Özmenç joined Beşiktaş J.K. Football Academy in 1947 and promoted to senior section following year. He earned 239 appearances for the club, scoring 9 goals across all competitions between 1948 and 1957. Style of play and reception According to Beşiktaş official website, Özmenç was noted a player with pace, "good" ball technique and described as a "resilient" player. He was one of 33 players listed "Centennial squad" of the club, placing himself in "bronze eleven", selected after a survey held between the official club members in 2003, centennial year of the club. 1956–57 Federation Cup
The 1956–57 Turkish Federation Cup was the first professional nationwide football competition in Turkey. The tournament was organized by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) to select a club that would represent Turkey in the 1957–58 European Cup. 30 clubs participated: 10 from Istanbul, 10 from İzmir, 8 from Ankara, and 2 from Adana. These teams were split into three groups: the Istanbul Group, İzmir Group, and the Ankara Group (the two clubs from Adana were included in the Ankara Group). The first three rounds were contested in a single knock-out system. The top two teams from each group qualified for the Final Group, which was played in league format. Beşiktaş won the title and qualified for the 1957–58 European Cup as Turkish champions. However, since the TFF failed to register their name for the draw in time, they could not participate in the European Cup in that season after all. Istanbul Football League
The Istanbul Football League () was founded as a regional association football, football league under the name Constantinople Football Association League by James La Fontaine and Henry Pears in Istanbul, the capital of the former Ottoman Empire, in 1904. The Istanbul League was the first football organization ever in the Ottoman Empire and later Turkey. In the inaugural 1904–05 season the matches between the four teams, Moda F.C., Moda FC, HMS Imogene F.C., HMS Imogene, Elpis F.C., Elpis FC, and Cadi-Keuy F.C., Cadi-Keuy FC were played on Sundays, leading to the name of the league, Istanbul Sunday League. Henry Pears, an Englishman and one of the three founders, promised to ultimately award the shield to the club with the most championships won during the initial 10 years.
