Evelyn, London
Evelyn is an electoral ward in the northwest of the London Borough of Lewisham. It covers the northern part of Deptford on the south bank of the River Thames, and is the only Lewisham ward that borders the river. It returns councillors to Lewisham London Borough Council. Name It is named after John Evelyn who settled in Deptford with his wife in 1652. Their house, Sayes Court, adjacent to the naval dockyard, was purchased by Evelyn from his father-in-law Sir Richard Browne in 1653 and Evelyn soon began to transform the gardens. Surrey Docks (ward)
The Surrey Commercial Docks were a large group of docks in Rotherhithe, South East London, located on the south bank (the Surrey side) of the River Thames. The docks operated in one form or another from 1696 to 1969. Most were subsequently filled in and redeveloped for residential housing, and the area is now known as Surrey Quays, although the name Surrey Docks is retained for the electoral ward. History The sparsely populated Rotherhithe peninsula was originally wet marshland alongside the river. It was unsuitable for farming, but its riverside location just downstream from the City of London made it an ideal site for docks. The area had long been associated with maritime activities: in July 1620 the Pilgrim Fathers' ship the Mayflower sailed from Rotherhithe for Southampton, to begin loading food and supplies for the voyage to New England, and a major Royal Navy dockyard was located just down the river at Deptford. Heidi Alexander (born 17 April 1975) is a British politician who has served as Secretary of State for Transport since November 2024. A member of the Labour Party, she has been Member of Parliament (MP) for Swindon South since 2024. Previously she was the MP for Lewisham East from 2010 to 2018. 2019 Whitefoot By-election
Whitefoot was, until 2022, an electoral ward in the London Borough of Lewisham. Its area is south-east of Charing Cross, and north of Downham, south of Catford, west of Grove Park, and east of Bellingham. The ward was named after Whitefoot Lane, which formed much of its northern boundary. Part of the South Eastern Main Line between Hither Green and Grove Park stations marked the whole eastern edge of the ward. The western boundary followed some of the Catford Loop Line, between Bellingham and Beckenham Hill stations, and small parts of two A-roads, South End Lane ( A2218) and Bromley Road ( A21).
