Evaldo Gonçalves
Evaldo Gonçalves de Queiroz (15 June 1933 – 18 January 2025) was a Brazilian politician. Brazilian Constituent Assembly (1988)
The 1988 Constituent Assembly (), also known as the National Constituent Assembly () was held in Brasília to establish Brazil's new democratic Constitution after 21 years under military rule. In November 1986, general elections were held to elect the members of the constituent assembly, which took office on February 1, 1987. Ulysses Guimarães, from the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party of São Paulo, served as president of the Assembly. The majority in the Constituent Assembly was formed by the Democratic Centre ( PMDB, PFL, PTB, PDS, and smaller parties), also known as "Big Centre" ('' Centrão''). They were supported by the executive branch and represented conservative factions of the society, and had a decisive influence in the work of the Constituent and the outcome of important decisions, such as the duration of then President Sarney's term, the maintenance of the agrarian policy and the role of the Armed Forces. The Chamber of Deputies () is a federal legislative body and the lower house of the National Congress of Brazil. The chamber comprises 513 deputies, who are elected by proportional representation to serve four-year terms. The current president of the chamber is the Deputy Hugo Motta ( Republicanos- PB), who was elected on 1 February 2025. Structure The number of deputies elected is proportional to the size of the population of the respective state (or of the Federal District) as of 1994. However, no delegation can be made up of less than eight or more than seventy seats. Thus the least populous state elects eight federal deputies and the most populous elects seventy. These restrictions favour the smaller states at the expense of the more populous states and so the size of the delegations is not exactly proportional to population. Democratic Social Party
The Democratic Social Party (, PDS) was a conservative Brazilian political party. It was established in 1979 as a continuation of the National Renewal Alliance (ARENA), the political wing of the military during the 1965–79 military dictatorship, at a time in which the country was moving away from authoritarianism. However, the official foundation date is 31 January 1980. In 1985, when Paulo Maluf won the party's nomination for the presidential bid, a huge group, led by José Sarney (former leader of ARENA from 1971 to 1980 and of the PDS from 1980 to 1985), Jorge Bornhausen and Marco Maciel, founded the Liberal Front Party (PFL). Sarney was elected vice-president in that year's election, but he served from the beginning as president, due to the death of President-elect Tancredo Neves.
