Eurovision Song Contest 1963
The Eurovision Song Contest 1963 was the eighth edition of the Eurovision Song Contest and took place in London, United Kingdom. It was organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster BBC, British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), which agreed to stage the event after 's (RTF), which had won the , declined to host it due to financial shortcomings, also having hosted the competition in and . The contest was held at the Television Centre, London, BBC Television Centre on Saturday 23 March 1963 and was hosted by Katie Boyle for a second time. Sixteen countries participated in the contest, the same countries that had also participated the previous two years. The contest this year was won by with the song "", performed by Grethe Ingmann, Grethe and Jørgen Ingmann. This was the first victory for any of the Nordic countries, Nordic countries. Caterina Irene Elena Maria Boyle, Lady Saunders (; 29 May 1926 – 20 March 2018), usually known as Katie Boyle, was an Italian-born British actress, writer, radio announcer and television personality. Franck Pourcel (14 August 1913 – 12 November 2000) was a French composer, arranger, and conductor of popular and classical music. Biography Early life Born in Marseille, France, Pourcel started learning the violin at the age of six. Later, Pourcel studied violin at the Conservatoire in Marseille, and also drums because he loved jazz, and he spent a year in Paris at the Conservatoire. Alain Barrière
Alain Barrière (; born Alain Bellec; 18 November 1935 – 18 December 2019) was a French singer, who was active from the 1950s until his death and was known for participating in the Eurovision Song Contest 1963. Early life After growing up in a small town on the coast of Brittany, in 1955 Barrière enrolled in the École nationale supérieure d'arts et métiers in Angers. As a student he bought a guitar and started to write songs. After graduating in engineering in 1960, he moved to Paris to take up employment, and started to perform in the evenings at small clubs around the capital. He won a song contest in 1961 with the self-penned song "Cathy"; his style was chanson-based with no concession to the burgeoning yé-yé scene, but nonetheless he was soon signed to a recording contract and started to release singles regularly, enabling him to give up his job and make at least a modest living from music. George De Godzinsky
George de Godzinsky (5 July 1914 – 23 May 1994) was a Finnish composer, pianist and conductor. De Godzinsky is known for his Schlager music although he composed music for movies and operettas. De Godzinsky was born in Saint Petersburg, Russian Empire. He was of Polish, Czech, Georgian and Romanian ancestry through his father, Franciszek de Godzinsky, and of Dutch and Swiss descent through his mother, Maria Othmar-Neuscheller. George de Godzinsky's father was a Saint Petersburg-based civil servant and businessman who had strong ties to customers in Finland. During the Russian revolution the family escaped to Finland. Finland was represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 1963 with the song "", written by Börje Sundgren, and performed by Laila Halme. The Finnish participating broadcaster, (Yle), selected its entry through a national final and, subsequently, the performer internally once the national final was over. In the national final, held on 14 February, "" was performed once with Marjatta Leppänen and once with Irmeli Mäkelä. After the final Yle organized an extra singing test to find the best vocalist for the song. Laila Halme, who originally had finished third in the national final, was chosen as the performer on 19 February. Sejr Volmer-Sørensen
Sejr Volmer-Sørensen (7 February 1914 – 11 May 1982), also known as Volmer-Sørensen and Win Volmer-Sørensen, was a Danish lyricist, actor, director and television host. Born in Kristianstad, Volmer-Sørensen was adopted by a family of leather merchants. In 1932, he graduated and moved to Paris to train as a pianist and made his debut as a musician at the 1934 Tivoli Concert. DR (), officially the Danish Broadcasting Corporation in English, is a Danish public-service radio and television broadcasting company. Founded in 1925 as a public-service organization, it is Denmark's oldest and largest electronic media enterprise.
