The European School, Luxembourg I was the first of the European Schools. It was founded in October 1953 on the initiative of officials of the European Coal and Steel Community, with the support of the Community's institutions and the government of Luxembourg. In April 1957, it formally became the first of the European Schools. Today it is located on the Kirchberg-Plateau in Luxembourg City. History Boulevard de la Foire Parents working for the European Coal and Steel Community established the school in 1953. () It became necessary to establish a new school when many European children from varying language backgrounds appeared. When the school was founded it was located on the premises of a former furniture shop in the Limpertsberg quarter of Luxembourg city. It initially had 70 students. Kirchberg, Luxembourg
Kirchberg ( lb, Kierchbierg, meaning "church hill") is a quarter in north-eastern Luxembourg City, in southern Luxembourg. It consists of a plateau overlooking the north-east of the historical city center, Ville Haute, connected to the rest of the elevated city by the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge, which spans the Pfaffenthal valley. It is often referred to, in reference to the geographical feature it inhabits, as the Kirchberg plateau, or simply Kirchberg by Luxembourgish residents. Kirchberg is the predominant location of the European Union institutions and bodies based within Luxembourg, and is sometimes used as a metonym for the EU's judiciary, which occupies the quarter. Boulevard De La Foire
The N51 is a road in Luxembourg City, in southern Luxembourg. It is one of the city's main thoroughfares, carrying traffic from Ville Haute, through Kirchberg, to a junction with the A1. For the north-eastern three quarters of its length, on the eastern side of the Alzette, it bears the name Avenue John F. Kennedy. West of the Alzette, it is successively named Boulevard Robert Schuman (after Robert Schuman); Boulevard de la Foire; and Boulevard Grand-Duchesse Charlotte (after Grand Duchess Charlotte). At its southern end, in south-western Ville Haute, the N51 meets the N4 at an intersection. From here, it heads northwards, followed by northeastwards, skirting the western edge of Ville Haute. Henk Ary Christiaan van der Zwan (20 May 1956) is a Dutch diplomat. He served as ambassador of the Netherlands to Estonia (2006–2010), Canada (2016–2020), and since 2021, Suriname. Biography Van der Zwan was born on 20 May 1956 in Leeuwarden. In 1975, he graduated from the European School in Luxembourg, and continued his studies at Leiden University where he graduated in 1984. He started to work for the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands. Between 2002 and 2006, van der Zwan was general secretary of Queen Beatrix. In 2006, he was appointed Ambassador of the Netherlands to Estonia, and served until 2010. Between 2016 and 2020, van der Zwan served as ambassador to Canada. Placebo (band)
Placebo are a British rock band, formed in London in 1994 by vocalist–guitarist Brian Molko and bassist–guitarist Stefan Olsdal. Drummer Robert Schultzberg joined in late 1994, but left in 1996 shortly after the release of the band's eponymous debut album due to conflicts with Molko, and was replaced the same year by Steve Hewitt. Following the release of a demo, a split single, and their eponymous debut album, Placebo gained exposure in 1997 after the single " Nancy Boy" became popular in the UK, a song notorious at the time for its gender-bending content. The band stood out amongst the Britpop scene they were associated with at the time for their androgynous appearance and musical content, and lyrics which openly discussed sexuality, mental health, and drug use. Jean (Jean Benoît Guillaume Robert Antoine Louis Marie Adolphe Marc d'Aviano; 5 January 1921 – 23 April 2019) was the Grand Duke of Luxembourg from 1964 until his abdication in 2000.
