EuroBasket 1959
The 1959 FIBA European Championship, commonly called FIBA EuroBasket 1959, was the eleventh FIBA EuroBasket regional basketball championship, held by FIBA Europe. The tournament, which was hosted by Turkey, began on 21 May 1959 and concluded with the final on 31 May 1959. Seventeen national teams affiliated with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) entered the competition. Mithat Paşa Stadium, Istanbul was the location of the event. The Soviet Union claimed their fifth EuroBasket title, while Czechoslovakia captured the silver, and France the bronze. Results First round In the preliminary round, the 17 teams were split up into four groups. One of the groups had five teams, with the other three having four each. Turhan Tezol
Turhan Tezol (9 August 1932 – 27 April 2014) was a Turkish basketball player, who competed in the 1952 Summer Olympics. Turhan Tezol was born to Mehmet Şükrü, an immigrant from Kavala, (then Ottoman Empire), and his wife Zeliha at Istanbul on August 9, 1932. He had four brothers, Alaettin, Tayyar, Erdoğan and Ayhan, as well as two sisters İnal and Mualla (Kuşçu). Tezol began his playing career at the local team Modaspor. He enjoyed three times Turkish Basketball League championship title with his club. he left Modaspor, and moved to İzmir joining the basketball side of Altınordu. After retiring from active sports, he served as executive at the İzmir-based clubs Altay, Göztepe and Altınordu. Tezol worked also for the Turkish Basketball Federation. Gennadi Georgievich Volnov (alternate spelling: Gennady, , November 28, 1939 – July 15, 2008) was a Russian basketball player who played for the senior Soviet Union national team from the late 1950s, to the early 1970s. He was born in Moscow. In 2018, he was named one of the 101 Greats of European Basketball. Club career Volnov played with Spartak Moscow (1957–1958). He spent most of his club career playing with CSKA Moscow (1958–1970). Jānis Krūmiņš
Jānis Krūmiņš (30 January 1930 – 20 November 1994) was a Soviet-Latvian professional basketball player. Helped by his height (about 220 cm, or 7'3"), he was the first giant center that dominated under European baskets, for years. As a player of the senior Soviet Union national basketball team, Krūmiņš won 3 gold medals at the 1959, 1961, and 1963 EuroBaskets, as well as 3 silver medals at the 1956, 1960, and 1964 Summer Olympic Games. A Russian poll that was conducted in 2006, named Krūmiņš as the 3rd most popular Soviet men's basketball player of all time, after Arvydas Sabonis and Vladimir Tkachenko.
