Etna, Missouri
Etna is an unincorporated community in Scotland County, Missouri, United States. It lies at an elevation of 755 feet (230 m). History The first settlement at Etna was made as early as 1855 by a colony of Germans. Etna, named for the Sicilian volcano, was surveyed and laid out in April 1865 by Andrew Hunt. Etna was the site of a small skirmish during the early days of the Civil War. On July 21, 1861, the 1st Northeast Missouri Home Guards under Colonel David Moore, with assistance of additional units from Iowa and Illinois, attacked pro-Confederate Missouri State Guard (MSG) forces at Etna. The action was part of General Nathaniel Lyon's efforts to clear "rebels" from rural Missouri. After a brief battle the MSG forces, mostly lightly armed cavalry, were driven from the town and surrounding areas of Scotland County and Moore's unit returned to its main base at Athens, Missouri. Scotland County, Missouri
Scotland County is a County (United States), county in northeastern Missouri. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, its population was 4,716, making it Missouri's seventh-least populous county. Its county seat is Memphis, Missouri, Memphis. Home Guard (Union)
In the American Civil War the Home Guard or Home Guards were local militia raised from Union loyalists. David Moore (Military)
David Moore (July 3, 1817 – July 19, 1893) was an American military officer who served in the Mexican–American War and the American Civil War. He attained the rank of brevet Brigadier General, United States Volunteers before leaving military service. Later he would serve as a member of the Missouri General Assembly. Early life David Moore was born in Columbiana County, Ohio, on July 3, 1817, to John and Sarah (Clark) Moore. His father John Moore, an Irish immigrant, served in the War of 1812 and moved to Ohio shortly thereafter. David had two siblings—a sister and a brother—plus several half-siblings from his widowed father's first marriage. At the age of thirteen Moore moved to Wayne County, Ohio, and became a carpenter's apprentice until he was eighteen. Missouri State Guard
The Missouri State Guard (MSG) was a military force established by the Missouri General Assembly on May 11, 1861. While not a formation of the Confederate States Army, the Missouri State Guard fought alongside Confederate troops and, at various times, served under Confederate officers. Background The Missouri General Assembly passed the "Military Bill" on May 11, 1861, in direct response to the Camp Jackson Affair in St. Louis the previous day. The final version of the act approved on May 14 authorized the Governor of Missouri, Claiborne Fox Jackson, to disband the old Missouri Volunteer Militia and reform it as the Missouri State Guard to resist a feared invasion by the Union Army. Nathaniel Lyon
Nathaniel Lyon (July 14, 1818 – August 10, 1861) was a United States Army officer who was the first Union Army, Union General officer, general to be killed in the American Civil War. He is noted for his actions in Missouri in 1861, at the beginning of the conflict, to forestall secret secessionist plans of the governor Claiborne Jackson. He had fought in the Second Seminole War in Florida and the Mexican–American War. In 1850 he co-led the Bloody Island Massacre of 60–200 Pomo Native Americans in the United States, Native American old men, women, and children as part of the wider California genocide. Several days later, Lyon was responsible for another massacre in Cokadjal, killing 75 to 100 Native Americans, albeit the number was likely double.
