Essex–Hudson Greenway
The Greenway, originally the Essex–Hudson Greenway, is a planned state park and greenway in the northeastern New Jersey counties of Essex and Hudson. It will follow an abandoned railroad right of way (ROW) across the New Jersey Meadowlands, over the Hackensack and Passaic rivers, as well pass through densely populated neighborhoods. The nearly long shared-use linear park/rail trail will encompass about and will average in width. Running between Jersey City and Montclair it will pass through Secaucus (where it will run concurrently with the Hackensack River Greenway), Arlington in northern Kearny, North Newark, Belleville, Bloomfield and Glen Ridge. Construction began in July 2025 for initial phase in Newark and Kearny is expected to open in late 2025. In 2021 NJ Transit authorized studies for alternative options between the Meadowlands Sports Complex and Secaucus Junction including a bus " transitway" along the ROW. New York And Greenwood Lake Railway (1878–1943)
The New York and Greenwood Lake Railway owned a line between Croxton, Jersey City, New Jersey and Greenwood Lake, New York. Service on the line was provided by the Erie Railroad. The Montclair Railway was established in 1867. It was founded by Julius Pratt, who had renamed Montclair, New Jersey, for what was then West Bloomfield. By the mid-1870s it ran between Croxton and Sterling Forest at the New York state line, but the financially unstable railroad went into receivership, and in 1875 became the Montclair and Greenwood Lake Railway In 1878 the company was re-organized as the New York and Greenwood Lake Railway (NYGL), under control of the Erie. Bloomfield is a township in Essex County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey, and an inner-ring suburb of Newark.
