Eskdale, New Zealand
Eskdale is a rural settlement in the Hastings District and Hawke's Bay region of New Zealand's North Island. It is located north of Napier on State Highway 5, near the mouth of the Esk River. Description and history The valley has many vineyards, wineries, orchards and fishing spots. The Eskdale War Memorial Church was designed by James Chapman-Taylor, and dedicated to Percival Moore Beattie, a local man killed in World War I. The river has a history of flooding. Flash flooding inundated the settlement in March 2018, leaving most of the local holiday parks underwater. Flooding during Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023 inundated large parts of the valley, causing significant damage in the settlement, destroying houses and sections of State Highway 5 and the Palmerston North–Gisborne Railway Line. Cyclone Gabrielle
Severe Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle was a powerful and destructive tropical cyclone that devastated parts of the North Island of New Zealand and affected parts of Vanuatu and Norfolk Island in February 2023. 2013 New Zealand Census
The 2013 New Zealand census was the thirty-third national census. "The National Census Day" used for the census was on Tuesday, 5 March 2013. The population of New Zealand was counted as 4,242,048 – an increase of 214,101 or 5.3% over the 2006 census. The 2013 census forms were the same as those developed for the 2011 census which was cancelled due to the February 2011 major earthquake in Christchurch. There were no new topics or questions. New Zealand's next census was conducted in March 2018. The 2018 New Zealand census, which took place on Tuesday 6 March 2018, was the thirty-fourth national census in New Zealand. The population of New Zealand was counted as 4,699,755 – an increase of 457,707 (10.79%) over the 2013 census. Results from the 2018 census were released to the public on 23 September 2019, from the Statistics New Zealand website. The most recent New Zealand census was held in March 2023. History Background The ''Census Act 1877'' required censuses to be held every fifth year and is well embedded in legislation and government systems. Since 1881, censuses have been held every five years, with the exceptions of those in 1931 and 1941 and the one in 2011 which was cancelled due to the February 2011 earthquake in Christchurch, which displaced many Canterbury residents from their homes only a few weeks before census day. Whirinaki, Hawke's Bay
Whirinaki is a small coastal settlement in Hastings District, in the eastern North Island of New Zealand. It sits just north of the mouth of the Esk River, a few kilometres east of Eskdale and a similar distance north of Bay View, which is part of Napier. It lies on State Highway 2, just north of its junction with State Highway 5. Pan Pac timber and wood pulp mill, which opened in 1973 and is one of Hawke's Bay's largest industrial plants, is at Whirinaki. The diesel-powered Whirinaki Power Station opened next to the mill in 1978, later closed and then reopened in 2004. Designed to be a standby power station, it has a total capacity of 155 MW and is owned and operated by Contact Energy. A mountain bike park is immediately north of the mill. Pētane Marae is in a rural area nearby. It is a meeting place for Ngāti Matepū and Ngāti Whakaari, two ''hapū'' (sub-tribes) of the Ngāti Kahungunu ''iwi'' (tribe). Puketapu, Hawke's Bay
Puketapu is a rural community in the Hastings District, New Zealand, Hastings District and Hawke's Bay Region of New Zealand's North Island. It is located west of Napier, New Zealand, Napier and north of Hastings, New Zealand, Hastings. In February 2023 Puketapu was severely affected by flooding from Cyclone Gabrielle. Water from the Tutaekuri River rose above homes and damaged much of the agricultural land. ''Newshub'' (stylised as Newshub.) was a New Zealand news service that operated from 1989 to 2024 and served as the local news division of Warner Bros. Discovery New Zealand until its closure. The division, known as ''3 News'' until 2016, had produced news bulletins and current affairs programming for the television channel Three (TV channel), Three from its inception. Palmerston North–Gisborne Line
The Palmerston North–Gisborne Line (PNGL) is a secondary main line railway in the North Island of New Zealand. It branches from the North Island Main Trunk at Palmerston North and runs east through the Manawatū Gorge to Woodville, New Zealand, Woodville, where it meets the Wairarapa Line, and then proceeds to Hastings, New Zealand, Hastings and Napier, New Zealand, Napier in Hawke's Bay before following the coast north to Gisborne, New Zealand, Gisborne.
